AFI Awards TV Top 10: Freshman Shows & Emmy Favorites Lead List; ‘Baby Reindeer’ Gets Special Award

The 2024 AFI Awards honored Netflix's Nobody Wants This and Max's The Penguin among this year's recipients for outstanding television programs.
The honorees were selected by a jury process involving AFI trustees, artists, critics, and scholars to recognize achievements in the art of the moving image.
Other shows on the list included Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, A Man on the Inside, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Shogun, Shrinking, and True Detective: Night Country, with a special award going to Netflix's Baby Reindeer.

The Netflix comedy Nobody Wants This and Max’s limited series The Penguin were among this year’s honorees for the 2024 AFI Awards. See the full list below.

The recipients include 10 outstanding television programs deemed “culturally and artistically representative of this year’s most significant achievements in the art of the moving image.” The Kristen Bell comedy and the Colin Farrell drama are freshmen, as are Netflix’s A Man on the Inside starring Ted Danson, FX’s Shōgun and Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine.

The other shows on AFI’s list are ABC’s Abbott Elementary, FX’s The Bear, Max’s Hacks, Apple TV+’s Shrinking and HBO’s True Detective: Night Country. A special award will also be given to Netflix’s Baby Reindeer , which won six primetime Emmys this year.

AFI Awards selections are made through a jury process where AFI trustees, artists, critics and scholars determine the year’s most outstanding achievements and provide artistic and cultural context for the selection of each honoree. Honorees will gather on Friday, January 10, for recognition at the annual AFI Awards private luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills.

This year’s juries — one for motion pictures and one for television — included artists Sterlin Harjo, Gale Anne Hurd, Charles Melton, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Jane Seymour; scholars Mark Harris, Leonard Maltin and more from Syracuse University, the University of Southern California and the University of California, Santa Cruz; members of the AFI Board of Trustees; critics Ann Hornaday, Mary McNamara, Janet Maslin, Peter Travers and others from The New Yorker , NPR, TV Guide and more.

The juries were chaired by AFI Board of Trustees member Jeanine Basinger and AFI Board of Trustees Vice Chair Richard Frank.
