  • Amazon MGM Studios has taken over creative control of the James Bond franchise from producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who have stepped back from their oversight role.

Move over MI6, Amazon is taking over.

Amazon MGM Studios has assumed creative control of the legendary James Bond franchise with producers and siblings Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the stewards of the 007 legacy, stepping back from their oversight role, Deadline reported . When Amazon purchased MGM for $8.5 billion in 2021, the motion picture studio was valued between $3.5 billion and $4 billion—largely driven by the allure of the superspy movie franchise. However, Amazon’s ability to fully capitalize on the project was allegedly restricted by Broccoli and Wilson’s continued involvement. To resolve this, the streamer has now invested an additional $1 billion to secure complete control over the future direction and development of the 007 IP.

Amazon MGM Studios, along with Broccoli and Wilson, have established a joint venture to manage the James Bond intellectual property rights. While all three will retain co-ownership of the franchise, creative control over future projects will now reside with the studio. When Amazon originally acquired MGM, it secured distribution rights for all Bond films but only held a 50 percent stake in the franchise, leaving it in a passive role when it came to the artistic direction.

Since Daniel Craig’s final outing as the iconic spy in No Time to Die, there’s been speculation about the franchise’s future, yet no official announcements regarding its next steps have been made. Filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan have previously shown interest in leaving their mark on the Bond franchise, while actors Idris Elba, Regé-Jean Page, and  Aaron Taylor-Johnson have all been rumored to be Craig’s successor. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos even got in on the fun now that his company has creative control. On Thursday, he asked his followers in a post on X who they’d pick as the next Bond.

“My respect, admiration and love for Barbara and Michael remain constant and undiminished,” Craig told Variety regarding the duo’s decision to step back. “I wish Michael a long, relaxing (and well deserved) retirement and whatever ventures Barbara goes on to do, I know they will be spectacular and I hope I can be part of them.”

After nearly 60 years, Wilson, who co-wrote and produced many of the films, announced his retirement from Hollywood stating: “I am stepping back from producing the James Bond films to focus on art and charitable projects.” Meanwhile, Broccoli plans to remain active in the film industry but will shift her focus to other producing endeavors. “My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli. I have had the honor of working closely with four tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of No Time to Die and Michael retiring, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.”
