2026 Indianapolis Black Theater Co. season includes satire and history

Fresh off Indy Black Solo Fest, the Indianapolis Black Theater Co. has announced its season of three plays that will take place across 2026. The shows — which contend with stereotypes aimed at Black communities, racial injustice, and resilience and hope in the face of violence — all center on community engagement.

Here's the Indianapolis Black Theatre Co.'s 2026 season. All productions will take place at the District Theatre, 627 Massachusetts Ave. Find tickets at indydistricttheatre.org .

'Blood at the Root'

April 16-26

The play by Dominique Morisseau is inspired by a true story about racial injustice in 2006 in Louisiana. Tensions between Black and White high school students escalate after nooses were hung from a tree to taunt Black students. To bring the work to today's students, the theater plans to partner with schools and community organizations.

'The Colored Museum'

July 2-11

Using satire to challenge Black stereotypes around slavery, entertainment and more, George C. Wolfe's play examines what it means to be Black in contemporary America.

'Kila'Delphia: The Stage Play'

Sept. 17-27

Three young men must navigate a dangerous city on their own in this show by DP Demarco, which reckons with violence and addiction while offering hope and resilience.
