Carly Rae Jepsen, Lena Dunham Are Bringing ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ to Broadway
- Broadway adaptations of Shakespeare plays like Othello and Romeo & Juliet have been successful, with a new musical version of The Taming of the Shrew inspired by the film 10 Things I Hate About You in the works.
Most of Shakespeare's most famous plays have made it to Broadway . Othello is currently running with Denzel Washington at the helm and a production of Romeo & Juliet starring Rachel Zegler and Kit Connor recently wrapped, though the pop-inspired reimagining &Juliet is still playing. Another Shakespeare classic, The Taming of the Shrew , is heading to Broadway in the form of a musical inspired by the classic 1999 film, 10 Things I Hate About You .
The adaptation of the film has musician Carly Rae Jepsen attached to co-write the score with producer Ethan Gruska. The book will be written by playwright Jessica Huang and actress-director Lena Dunham. Jepsen previously appeared on Broadway in the titular role of Cinderella in 2014. Earlier this week, her former co-star Ann Harada reunited with her, sharing a photo with the caption: "Reunited with my superstar ex-stepsister doing a reading of her new musical."

It has not yet been announced which theater 10 Things I Hate About You will call home, or when it will open. Christopher Wheeldon will helm direction and choreography for the production, while Tom Kitt has been tapped for music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations. The adaptation will be produced by Mike Bosner.
Jepsen and Gruska previously teamed up for the pop musician's most recent album, The Loveliest Time . Gruska has also worked with Remi Wolf, Shawn Mendes, boygenius, Ryan Beatty, and more. 10 Things I Hate About You will mark Dunham's first Broadway venture. She's currently attached to write the script for an upcoming Apple Studios and A24 film chronicling Sam Bankman-Fried's rise and fall as chronicled in Michael Lewis' Going Infinite: The Rise and Fall of a New Tycoon .
10 Things I Hate About You arrived in 1999 with career-defining performances from Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. It made Rolling Stone 's 99 Best Movies of 1999 list, coming in at Number 36.
