Coldplay concerts in El Paso: Top moments include city key, mountain fans, proposals
"A hug for the soul."
"Not just a concert, but an experience."
"Endless electric, positive energy."
These are just some of the ways El Pasoans are describing Coldplay's "Music of the Spheres" tour in the Sun City on Friday and Saturday. Thousands of fans filled Sun Bowl Stadium for a pair of shows under the borderland's starry sky, wearing LED wristbands that created a magnificent light show.
The concert opened with El Paso's own Jim Ward, followed by Palestinian-Chilean pop artist Elyanna and American singer Willow, daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.
El Paso was the only stop in Texas for the tour.
There were numerous memorable and viral moments from Coldplay's performances that are making the rounds on social media. From heartwarming proposals to fans climbing atop a mountain to get a view, here are the highlights from the shows.
Couples get engaged at Coldplay concert
A handful of couples got engaged at the Coldplay concert — the touching moments were posted on Fit Fam El Paso's Instagram page. At Friday's concert, the band's frontman, Chris Martin, paused the show as cameras captured a man getting down on one knee and revealing a ring to his soon-to-be bride.
"And the funny thing is these two people have never met before tonight," Martin joked. "That's the power of love."
Another video on Fit Fam shared at least three other couples getting engaged as concertgoers cheered around them.
"Praying for a loving marriage for all of them, congratulations," one person wrote in the comments.
Chris Martin points out crowd on mountain
Videos of a crowd who watched the concerts from the top of the mountain hillside has also been making its way around social media.
As a camera zoomed in on the dozens of fans, Martin began to freestyle about them watching the show for free and made light of the situation.
"Hello, my beautiful brothers and sisters," Martin said. "I hope you get some good sleep, your tickets were very cheap."
The crowd then erupted in laughter.
El Paso musician receives shoutout
Martin credited El Paso musician Jim Ward with telling the band about El Paso, a moment shared by Mayor Renard Johnson on his official Instagram account.
"Jim is the man that told us about El Paso and made us fall in love with it from afar, and he wasn't lying," Martin said.
Ward, co-founder of Sparta and At the Drive-In, took the stage shortly after the doors opened.
Coldplay receives key to the city
Johnson also shared the moment the band received a key to the city.
"Lead singer Chris Martin said we were the first city ever to give them the key to the city. Incredibly grateful to have them in our beautiful Sun City for two unforgettable days. The only Texas stop on their tour, and they chose us," Johnson wrote on his official Instagram page.
Martin displayed the key at the concert and was met with applause.
"I'd like to say thank you so much to the mayor of El Paso who gave us a key to the city," Martin said. "I'm so happy that I'll never be locked out of El Paso."
