  • Sotheby's New York will auction off the iconic sweater vest worn by Matthew Broderick as Ferris Bueller in the 1986 classic film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

A piece of '80s pop culture history is heading to auction.

A key costume from Ferris Bueller's Day Off will be auctioned off by Sotheby's New York. The iconic sweater vest , famously worn by—anyone? anyone?—Matthew Broderick as Ferris Bueller in the 1986 classic, will be offered in a single-lot online auction on June 24.

Directed by John Hughes, Ferris Bueller's Day Off was released exactly 40 years ago and remains one of the most beloved comedies in cinematic history. The film follows Bueller as he and his best friend Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck) and girlfriend Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara) skip school and swan around Chicago. The film takes place over a single school day, meaning that costume designer Marilyn Vance had to encapsulate the spirit of each character in just one look. The vest she chose for Bueller reflects the happy-go-lucky attitude of the "righteous dude" and epitomizes his offbeat but snappy style. The charismatic truant has since become an archetype of 1980s cool.

Vance, who collaborated with Hughes on four films, decided Bueller's costume should defy mainstream '80s fashion to reflect his rebellious attitude. The only problem was she couldn't find he right vest for the job. She solved this costuming conundrum by buying a ready-to-wear sweater and removing the sleeves. Featuring a striking geometric pattern reminiscent of leopard print at Marshall Field's, the camel and chocolate vest became the star piece of Bueller's wardrobe and remains synonymous with the character.

The coveted costume comes to auction from the personal collection of Emmy-winning reporter Darren Rovell. "There are few costumes in Hollywood history that are instantly recognizable, and this is undeniably one of them," Rovell said in a statement. "For the discerning collector, it possesses all the hallmarks of greatness: exceptional preservation, iconic status, and unquestionable authenticity."

The vest, which has, of course, been photo-matched, will be on display at Sotheby's New York galleries until June 24. Bidding opened on Thursday, with the lot expected to sell for between $300,000 and $600,000. It could well reach that, too, given Cameron's father's Ferrari from the film sold for $313,000 at Bonhams in 2023.

The auction of Bueller's vest marks the debut of Sotheby's Popular Culture department. Led by Ralph DeLuca, who joined the auction house in March 2025, the new department will run dedicated multi-auction events twice a year. Held in October and April, the sales will offer exceptional items spanning film, music, television, and comics. The inaugural October Grails Week will take place during New York Comic-Con.
