The first cards from the upcoming Magic: The Gathering universes beyond set, Marvel Super Heroes, have been revealed on WeeklyMTG . On the December 9 episode of WeeklyMTG, Wizards of the Coast gave a preview of some cards from the set. This first look at the upcoming Marvel Super Heroes set included cards from the main set and the eternal-legal set.

A Magic Set That's Full of Marvel Heroes and Villains

Like the Marvel's Spider-Man set released earlier this year, Marvel Super Heroes features creatures with the hero and villain subtypes. However, unlike the Spider-Man set, this upcoming set will feature a wider range of characters from the Marvel comic books. Let's take a look at some of the Marvel heroes that'll be part of the Marvel Super Heroes main set.

Firstly, Wizards of the Coast kickstarted the reveals by giving us a look at this set's version of Captain America. Unlike the Jeskai-colored version released as part of the first Marvel Secret Lair Drop, Captain America, Super Soldier is mono-white. This new variant enters with a shield counter and protects you and your other heroes while it has shield counters.

Secondly, The Sentry also gets a card that creates his evil half The Void, for an opponent, when he enters. Afterwards, the third hero revealed on that episode of WeeklyMTG was Quicksilver, a mutant hero that's gifted with super speed. Quicksilver has a leyline-like effect if he's in your opening hand and also features Power-Up, one of this set's mechanics. The Power-Up mechanic seems functionally similar to Aetherdrift's Exhaust, except its cost can be reduced by the creature's mana cost.

Finally, the last main set hero revealed on the broadcast was Bruce Banner, who can transform into The Incredible Hulk. Bruce Banner / The Incredible Hulk sees the return of the transforming MDFC creature cards introduced in the Marvel's Spider-Man set. The Bruce Banner side has a card draw ability while The Incredible Hulk side has a combat oriented Enrage ability.

So far, all of the hero cards revealed so far have been pretty good and properly interpret the Marvel heroes. Moving on, some villains seen in the Marvel comic books will also be making an appearance in the upcoming set. The following are the Marvel villains that will be making an appearance in the Marvel Super Heroes universes beyond set.

Some of the Marvel villains that were revealed on the WeeklyMTG broadcast were Super-Skrull, Doctor Doom, and Baron Helmut Zemo. The Super-Skrull, who is an adversary of the Fantastic Four, has four activated abilities that represent each of their members.

Next, there's the Fantastic Four's most well-known villain, Doctor Doom, a mono-black villain that comes with some pretty interesting abilities. When Doctor Doom enters, he creates two of his famous Doombots, who in this set are colorless artifact creature tokens. Then, as long as you control an artifact creature or a Plan, Doctor Doom is indestructible giving him some resiliency. Lastly, Doctor Doom's third ability gives his controller some card advantage at the cost of life at the end step.

Thirdly, one of Captain America's nemeses, Baron Helmut Zemo connives whenever his controller casts a black spell from their hand. Furthermore, he also has a secondary Boast ability that exiles black cards from your graveyard and copies them for free. Like the hero cards revealed earlier, I also like the villain cards that were revealed and think they're good interpretations.

Marvel Super Heroes Introduces Plans, A New Enchantment Subtype

One of the new mechanics that players can expect in the upcoming Marvel Super Heroes set are things called Plans. Above, we can see that one of the conditions for Doctor Doom to remain indestructible is having a Plan card. So far, it looks like Plan will be a new enchantment subtype based on the revealed Plan, Doom Reigns Supreme. This plan gains a counter when its first effect happens and has a stronger effect when it has five counters.

Marvel's Storylines Brought to Magic in the Form of Sagas

Next, some iconic moments from the Marvel comic books will also re-appear in the Marvel Super Heroes set as Sagas. Like the version of these found in the Spider-Man set, these hope to immerse Magic players in some Marvel storylines. So far, the two Sagas revealed are those that depict The Coming of Galactus and the World War Hulk story.

In terms of flavor, these feel like good interpretations of these Marvel stories within the limitations of a Magic game. It will feel pretty epic when The Coming of Galactus resolves its fourth chapter a Galactus makes his grand entrance. Meanwhile, World War Hulk is incredibly powerful from the get-go, allowing players to cheat in a red or green creature. Those who enjoy playing Gruul-colored stompy decks will enjoy seeing their creature becoming a cataclysmic threat like the Hulk himself.

Commander Products Confirmed for Marvel Super Heroes

Finally, the upcoming Marvel Super Heroes set will also come with some commander precons for those who enjoy playing commander. The only commander-related reveal that was shown so far is the Fantastic Four who will helm a four-colored commander deck.

Each member of the Fantastic Four has a mono-color casting cost representing four out of Magic: The Gathering's five colors. However, all of them have a four-color identity because each of them has an activatable or triggered ability that's four-colored. I personally think Wizards of the Coast did a great job making each member of the team feel individually unique. Moreover, all of these cards have a powerful activated or triggered ability that complement each other well when put together.

So far, I think Wizards of the Coast is doing a better job handling the upcoming Marvel Super Heroes set. All of the revealed cards so far feel like good interpretations of the Marvel heroes and villains within Magic's universe. At least for now, I'm looking forward to this set and am hoping this set will be a good one.

Magic: The Gathering's upcoming Marvel Super Heroes Set will come in June 2026 after Lorwyn Eclipsed, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Secrets of Strixhaven. For more reveals of this set, Wizards of the Coast posted an article showcasing them on the Magic website .
