Former supermodel shares how rock legend ruined their marriage
Former supermodel Christie Brinkley once considered her ex-husband, music legend Billy Joel, her soulmate.
However the 71-year-old, who just released her memoir " Uptown Girl: A Memoir ‚" told Page Six the singer's drinking ruined their marriage.
"I do think that we were probably really soulmates, it was an amazing time of my life," Brinkley told the outlet.
"I had so much fun. We were such nomads, gypsies — just between his job and mine, we were seeing the world," she said. "It was wonderful, really wonderful."
But Brinkley said Joel would sometimes go missing for days because of his drinking. She told Page Six the "Piano Man" singer missed the fifth birthday of their daughter, Alexa Ray, and also a family Thanksgiving. Brinkley said Joel also started acting "delusional" after inviting his band to their home for a rehearsal.
"To be clear, I never wanted to end things with Billy," she said. "I read every self-help book I could find … we went to see a string of psychiatrists, psychologists and other medical doctors."
Brinkley and Joel were married from 1985 to 1994. She famously inspired Joel's hit single "Uptown Girl."
Although their marriage ended more than 30 years ago, Brinkley remains close with Joel, according to PEOPLE .
The former supermodel has been married four times, first to French artist Jean-François Allaux. After her and Joel split, Brinkley wed real estate developer Richard Taubman later in 1994. Her last marriage was to architect Peter Halsey Cook from 1996 to 2008.
