Guardians score vs Reds | Andrew Abbott completes shutout as Cincinnati beats Cleveland
CLEVELAND — Jose Ramirez and a struggling Guardians offense looked to rebound from June 9's loss against the Cincinnati Reds June 10 at Progressive Field but instead ran into a shutout from Andrew Abbott.
June 9 marked Terry Francona's return to Cleveland after momentarily retiring following the 2023 season.
Here's how the game on June 10 unfolded at Progressive Field.
Andrew Abbott completes shutout against Guardians
The Guardians offense has been struggling, and tonight was their worst performance of the month, as Andrew Abbott completed a three-hit shutout gem against Cleveland. He just missed out on a "Maddux" by going over 100 pitches.
Jose Ramirez was able to hit a single with two outs in the ninth to extend his on-base streak to 37 games, a career high.
Carlos Santana put a scare into the Reds, sending a drive to deep left-center field, but it was caught on the warning track to end the game.
Guardians enter 9th trailing by 1 run to Reds; Andrew Abbott going for shutout
The Guardians are entering the bottom of the ninth inning still shut out for the game and trailing the Reds 1-0.
Andrew Abbott remains on the mound to try to finish off a shutout.
Nolan Jones highlight reel play: Jones nails Matt McLain at the plate to save a run
The Reds are still only up 1-0 thanks to a superb throw from Nolan Jones in center field.
The Reds loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth inning leading by a run. Christian Encarnacion-Strand hit a high fly ball to center that allowed Jones to camp under it. Jones caught it and fired to the plate, and Bo Naylor applied the tag at home as Matt McLain slid into the plate.
The Guardians have six outs to get on the board. Andrew Abbott is still in the game.
Andrew Abbott dominating Guardians; Reds lead entering 7th inning
The Guardians have simply had nothing going for them the entire night. Andrew Abbott has kept the Cleveland lineup off balance to the tune of two hits in six scoreless innings.
Manager Stephen Vogt spoke before the game about how he'd like the lineup to just relax and go have fun and play rather than press at the plate, but the results aren't following.
Reds, Guardians score: Cincinnati takes lead in the fifth inning
Once again, as has been the theme lately, the Guardians will be playing catch-up.
The Reds took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, finally getting to Guardians starter Slade Cecconi.
Will Benson doubled to open the inning and Spencer Steer followed with an RBI single to right field to break the scoreless tie.
Carlos Santana helped Cecconi out later by making a highlight reel diving catch on a bunt attempt, but the Guardians will have to find some offense.
Slade Cecconi cruising; Guardians, Reds scoreless through 4 innings
Slade Cecconi has put one of his best outings of the year together thus far, holding the Reds to two hits while striking out eight. He's at only 56 pitches and has looked the best he has all season.
The Guardians offense, likewise, has looked roughly the same as the last couple weeks, as they've struggled to get anything going against Andrew Abbott.
Below is some pregame information.
Guardians injury update: Andrew Walters, Will Brennan out for rest of 2025 season
Guardians reliever Andrew Walters and outfielder Will Brennan are both done for the rest of the 2025 season, according to a medical update provided by the team.
Walters underwent shoulder surgery to repair the latissimus dorsi tendon June 9 in Chicago. He'll report to the team's facility in Goodyear, Ariz., to begin his rehab. Typical return-to-pitch time frames for that kind of a procedure are in the 8- to 10-month range.
It'll conclude a nightmarish 2025 for Walters, who has experienced multiple setbacks and arm injuries since training camp. He returned and appeared in only two games in the major leagues before leaving his last appearance in obvious pain.
Brennan underwent surgery to repair the UCL in his left elbow June 9 in Dallas. He'll also head to Goodyear, Ariz., to begin his own rehab. His expected time frame to return has been set at 6 to 8 months. It means he could be ready for baseball activities next spring, but his 2025 season is over.
Brennan appeared in six games for the Guardians, collecting only one hit.
