Iconic ’90s film getting sequel series with lead actress to reprise role
A sequel series of an iconic film from the 1990s is set to be "totally awesome" with the return of its lead actress.
Alicia Silverstone is set to reprise her role of Cher Horowitz in a "Clueless" sequel series on Peacock, Variety first reported .
The 48-year-old shared the news of the series in an Instagram post Thursday with the caption, "Totally buggin'… in the best way."
Exact plot details have yet to be revealed. The show is currently in development, according to Variety.
"Clueless," which is loosely based off Jane Austen's 1815 novel "Emma," premiered in 1995 and became a cult classic.
The coming-of-age teen comedy film was written and directed by Amy Heckerling. She, along with original producer Robert Lawrence, will serve as executive producers on the upcoming series, Variety reported.
It is unknown if fellow "Clueless" stars Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, Elisa Donovan, Breckin Meyer and Dan Hedaya will reprise their roles. Brittany Murphy, who played Tai Frasier in the film, died at age 32 in December 2009.
"Clueless" spawned a short-lived sitcom from 1996 to 1999 starring Rachel Blanchard as Cher. Another spin-off series, that had been set up at Peacock in 2020 , was eventually scrapped.
Silverstone's return to "Clueless" is the latest star reprising their role from an earlier series. Sarah Michelle Gellar is reprising the role of Buffy in a Hulu remake of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and most of the cast from "Malcolm in the Middle" cast are reuniting on Disney+ series .
