  • The iconic "Storytellers" statue, featuring a young Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse, has been temporarily removed from Disney California Adventure Park for deep restoration to prevent bronze oxidation.

If you’re heading to the West Coast for a spring break getaway, you might notice a famous face is missing from the "Happiest Place on Earth."

This week, guests at Disney California Adventure Parkwere surprised to find that the iconic "Storytellers" statue—which depicts a young Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse —has vanished from its usual spot on Buena Vista Street.

While the "Partners" statue in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle is the one most people know, "Storytellers" holds a special place in the hearts of Disney history buffs.

Installed in 2012, the bronze sculpture shows a 1923-era Walt just as he arrived in Hollywoodfrom Missouri, carrying a frayed suitcase and a "checkered coat," with a pre-fame Mickey standing by his side on a travel trunk. It represents the "wonderful audacity of youth" that built the Disney empire from just forty dollars and a dream.

The disappearance isn't a permanent "goodbye," but rather a high-stakes spa day. As of February 24, beige construction walls have gone up around the pedestal where the duo usually stands.

Because bronze naturally oxidizes over time, these statues require deep restoration beyond a simple nightly polishing to keep them from turning green or losing their luster in the California sun.

Disneyland Resort hasn't officially shared a "return to stage" date yet, but this kind of maintenance is standard for the park’s most precious landmarks. In the meantime, the quote on the statue’s plaque—"We are just getting started"—feels especially fitting as the park gears up for a busy 2026 season.

Whether you're a lifelong fan or a first-time visitor, it's a reminder that even the "Storytellers" need a little pixie dust and a fresh coat of shine every once in a while. While the walls might make for a less-than-perfect photo op today, the restored bronze is sure to be back in the spotlight soon, welcoming guests to the start of Walt's Hollywood journey once again.
