The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced in 2018, but since then, there has been virtually no new information about the title. The brief teaser trailer confirmed the long-awaited sequel to The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim was in development, but there has been little to no information released since then, almost eight years ago. Todd Howard, director and executive producer, has now provided a small update on the game, heading into 2026.

Speaking to Game Informer , various developers working on The Elder Scrolls 6 provided some updates on the game's progress, including Todd Howard. “It’s progressing really well. The majority of the studio’s on VI, but I’ll say this: We always overlap. So, we’re very used to overlapping development," said Howard.

He continued, saying, "And we have long pre-productions on things so that we feel good about them. And it’s a process. We all wish it went a little bit faster – or a lot faster – but it’s a process that we want to get right.”

Emil Pagliarulo, studio design director at Bethesda, acknowledged how much fans want the next game and compared the wait for The Elder Scrolls 6 to the wait for Grand Theft Auto 6 , saying, "Games take a long time, and games get pushed all the time; GTA just got pushed again, which was the smartest thing they could do, because a game the size of these games, they take not just a long time to make, but a long time to spit and polish and iron out the bugs."

Pagliarulo added: "...we’re going to take our time and as long as it needs to be to be great.”

It might be comforting to fans to know that development on The Elder Scrolls 6 is continuing along, while others might be frustrated at the now 14-year wait for a new Elder Scrolls game.

Additionally, a Nintendo Switch 2 version of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim was recently released on December 9, and saw negative backlash due to a lack of meaningful updates, a locked 30 FPS, and other performance issues.
