'Bachelorette' Night 1 recap: Could Boynton Beach's Brian Autz be this season's villain?

We're only one episode in to Season 21 of ABC's "The Bachelorette," but Boynton Beach's Brian Autz is already standing out as the potential villain of the season. Here's how his brief interactions with Jenn Tran went down.

The 33-year-old aesthetics consultant stepped out of the limo carrying two oversized syringes containing alcohol. He told Tran, "I want to make sure you're up to date with these shots." Her catchphrase is, "It's shot o'clock," so while it was corny, the intro was cute, creative and appropriate, given his profession.

Things didn't go south until later in the episode when he had a little altercation with Jeremy Simon, a 29-year-old real estate investor from Connecticut who resides in New York City.

Simon pulled into the driveway in what he claims to be his sports car (believed to be a Corvette) that he said he shipped from New York to the Hummingbird Nest Ranch in Santa Susana, California, where the premiere episode filmed instead of The Bachelor/Bachelorette Mansion in Agoura Hills.

Simon pulled up and tossed the keys to host Jesse Palmer as if Palmer was a valet attendant. (Coincidentally, Tran made her grand entrance on last season's "The Bachelor" by driving a go-kart on Night 1 when she met Joey Graziadei.)

Someone, presumably Autz, can be heard off-camera saying, "I know what I'm stealing later." On camera, he said, "Me and Jenn are going to go for a joy ride in that car later."

Soon after Simon took Tran out to the car for some one-on-one time, Autz intruded. He had Simon's car keys in his hand and asked Simon to get out because he'd like to get in and go for a ride with Tran. They had an awkward back and forth exchange until Simon finally surrendered and bid adieu to Tran, instructing her not to allow Autz to drive.

Tran told Autz, "That was a bold move of you."

In a confessional, Autz later snarkily said straight to camera, "Sorry, Jeremy, she's got too much horsepower for you."

This whole scenario seems a bit contrived by the show's producers who are thought to create dramatic situations and influence suitors' behaviors to make entertaining television. It raises more questions than answers:

• Why would someone ship a vehicle across the country to use for a short scene?

• Aren't there Corvettes available to rent for a few hours in California?

• Does Simon even own the car or was he just trying to woo Tran by flaunting fake wealth and status?

• How did Autz get the car keys? Did a producer hand them to him to go outside and stir up trouble?

Tran spoke to Us Weekly about the incident, saying, "(It was a) 100 times more awkward (than it looked). I was like, 'What do I do here?' But when things like that happen, I really was just like, 'I'm going to sit back and just watch this awkward moment happen and see how these boys are going to handle it for themselves' — because I'm not really here to train anybody on how to act in a situation or potty train anybody, so I am just sitting back and seeing what happens."

Despite calling their conduct "a major turnoff" in her interview with Us Weekly, Tran gave both men another shot at her heart by giving them each a rose in the rose ceremony.

Former Florida Atlantic football player John Mitchell also gets a rose

John Mitchell, a 25-year-old Delray Beach resident who played football at Florida Atlantic University , also received a rose. The medical student made Tran feel very special when he introduced himself. Standing at 6-foot-4 according to his profile on FAU's athletics' website, he brought an actual pedestal for the petite Tran to step on. She is reportedly 5-foot-2.

Mitchell said to her, "During this journey, I'm always going to put you on a pedestal." This meant a lot to her. She admits that she has had a series of toxic relationships with boyfriends and her own father.

"I feel like Cinderella right now. I've never been put first in a relationship before," she confessed. "I've never been put on a pedestal before, so it feels like a little fairy tale."

Even though he lives in the same city as Tran, the third Florida contestant, 28-year-old Miami resident Ricky Marinez was eliminated.

Tran and the remaining 18 men leave California unprecedentedly early in the season and fly Down Under to Melbourne, Australia for next week's episode. A synopsis for the episode hints that "a confrontation between two men reaches new peaks" at the hotel.

"The Bachelorette" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on ABC and is available to stream on Hulu the next day.
