Celebrity’s Viral ‘Cruise That Sold Out in 6 Minutes’ May Soon Be Coming to a River Near You
Celebrity Cruises'new European river-cruise line didn't just make a splash—it sold out faster than Eras Tour tickets. When the deposit window for its inaugural 2027 sailings opened, every available spot was gone in just six minutes, followed by another booking wave that cleared all remaining itineraries within hours .
The overwhelming response signaled that Celebrity's move from oceans to rivers wasn't just well-timed—it was the beginning of something much bigger. In fact, according to Royal Caribbean Group Chairman & CEO Jason Liberty, travelers who missed the European launch may soon have more chances. "We will have river ships around the world, not just Europe," he told trade partners at a celebratory event for the new Celebrity Xcel.
The debut vessels— Celebrity Seekerand Celebrity Compass—will carry just 172 passengers each and begin sailing in August 2027 along the Rhineand Danube, including voyages between Budapestand Vilshofen, Baseland Amsterdam, and a festive Christmas Markets route to Nuremberg.
All of the naugural sailings sold out within hours. As Celebrity Cruises President Laura Hodges Bethgeput it: "The unprecedented demand for our transformative river vacations continued… In less than five hours, all 33 Celebrity River Cruises 2027 sailings sold out, two years before the ships will set sail."

Why the Hype? Smaller Ships, Edge-Inspired Design and a New Kind of River Experience
Celebrity Cruises' is bringing Martini Bar to its River CruisesCelebrity
The excitement stems partly from Celebrity's leap into territory long dominated by European brands. As cruise expert Stewart Chiron(The Cruise Guy) told Parade earlier this fall , the move mirrors—but reverses— Viking's successful strategy: "Viking started from the river and went to the oceans. Celebrity is going from the oceans to the river, with a much larger passenger base. Many ocean cruisers have expressed interest in Europe's rivers, but want a much higher class of ships that Celebrity appears to have designed."
Celebrity's river ships borrow heavily from the modern aesthetics of the Edge-class fleet, incorporating elements like Martini Bar, a mini Café al Bacio, a Sunset Bar and even a reimagined Magic Carpet-style feature in the form of pods. The concept aims to deliver the intimacy of river cruising without sacrificing the cool-factor Celebrity fans expect.
At the same event , Hodges Bethge emphasized that the innovation extends beyond the ship. Because river vessels physically cannot support big-ship entertainment, Celebrity plans to shift experiences ashore: "We're taking the variety and excitement of a bigger ship and putting it on land," she said. With only 172 guests per sailing, the line can develop highly curated pre- and post-cruise programs and land-based events, details of which she plans to unveil in spring.

A Sold-Out Debut Fuels a Much Larger Global Ambition
The two debut ships are just the beginning. Cruise Critic confirmed that Celebrity has already ordered 10 river ships, with plans extending well beyond Europe's iconic waterways. Liberty underscored the seriousness of the investment: "Sometimes people ask how many we are going to order, where are they going to be—we've ordered quite a few. I just always remind people: this is not a hobby. We don't do hobbies."
Given the frenzy surrounding the 2027 launch—Liberty joked that Hodges Bethge walked into his office six minutes after sales opened, announcing, "It's over," to which he replied, "What took you so long?"—the appetite for Celebrity's river product appears boundless. The brand expects 2028 itineraries to go on sale in early 2026, and with global expansion officially on the table, travelers may soon find Celebrity's signature design, service and storytelling sailing through smaller waterways around the world.
