Kobe Bryant once shared the most important lesson that he learned from multi-billionaire Elon Musk
- Kobe Bryant was known for his relentless work ethic and dedication to learning, which he applied both on and off the basketball court.
The late Los Angeles Lakers legend, Kobe Bryant , was a man known for many different things. From his on-court mastery to a relentless competitive nature that never allowed him to take days off or rest, Bryant built a reputation as someone who squeezed every possible drop out of his God-given talent.
However, one thing Kobe also prided himself on was being a student of the game. The game, in this case, mostly meant basketball, but the Black Mamba applied those same principles of tirelessly learning and constantly improving to every other walk of life. That mindset was one of the key reasons why he found himself remarkably successful in his post-career ventures as well, long after the sneakers were put away.
For Bryant, learning was something that was required long before he entered the NBA. And even when his basketball career ended, that hunger to absorb knowledge from the very best never faded.
Kobe always learned from the best in the business
When it came to playing basketball, Kobe earned everything he ever achieved. A great part of that process involved looking up to one of his idols and mentors, Michael Jordan. From watching endless hours of game tape to picking apart MJ's brain whenever the opportunity presented itself, Bryant learned from the very best. And when it came time for his post-basketball career, Kobe did just the same.
In the world of business, where Bryant knew he still had room to grow, he sought advice from someone who was already operating on a completely different level. That someone was Elon Musk. After meeting the Tesla founder, it came as no surprise that Kobe was full of praise and openly shared how the billionaire inspired him.
"Elon Musk is a genius by all accounts. I asked him one time about how does he learn. And the amount of research and amount of study that he does is unheard of, but he'll always say the most important thing is imagination," the iconic shooting guard shared at the time via CNBC.
It seems that the thing connecting all that learning with actual results is imagination. Hard work was always a big part of it, but it was the ability to visualize outcomes and think outside the box that truly made the difference.
"I sat down and spoke with Elon for a couple of hours; it was a really, really enjoyable," Bryant added.
Musk is the wealthiest individual in the world
Just like Bryant was in the world of basketball, Musk has become a defining figure in the world of innovation. A billionaire who mass-produced electric cars and reshaped an entire industry with Tesla, Musk also built and owned game-changing ventures like SolarCity, SpaceX and Neuralink, among others. In addition, he acquired Twitter, later rebranded as X, in 2022, once again shaking up an already established space.
More recently, Musk led the Department of Government Efficiency during U.S. President Donald Trump's second administration, serving for four months before stepping down in May 2025. Talk about a career...
According to Forbes, Musk currently sits at No. 1 on the list of the world's richest individuals, with an estimated net worth of $498.8 billion. But for Kobe, money was never the talking point. As we all know, he had plenty of it himself. What mattered was the process.
In the end, that is what defined Bryant both on and off the court. Kobe always gravitated toward the very best, whether it was Jordan in basketball or Musk in business.
