Alana Stewart said her support for  Donald Trump  came with an unexpected personal cost. The ex-wife of  Rod Stewart  revealed that a longtime friendship ended after her friend learned she supported the president.

The 81-year-old actress shared the revelation Thursday, Sept. 3, after keeping politics mostly separate from that friendship. She said the pair had never even discussed politics, despite knowing their views differed.

Stewart said her friend told her she could no longer stay close because she supported Trump. "I just had the most surprising experience of having a long-time good friend of mine tell me that she couldn't be my friend anymore because she can't be around anyone who supports Trump," she wrote on  X.  "It's so shocking and so sad to me that some people can actually give up a friendship because of someone's political views."

Stewart explained that she usually discussed politics with like-minded people. She also avoided political posts on Instagram, though she shared them on X. Her Trump support, she stressed, was not unconditional. "I'm not a rabid Trump supporter who loves everything he does or says," Stewart wrote. Still, she believed he had done "a lot of good things for the country" and performed better than the previous administration.

She then outlined her reasons for supporting him, including immigration policies. Stewart said many Trump voters wanted the border closed and criminals deported. She also criticized liberals who opposed those positions.

The actress praised what she viewed as Trump's accomplishments during his second term. She cited eliminating taxes on tips and taxes on Social Security for seniors. Stewart also pushed back against the "fascist" label used against Trump.

Her frustration returned to the friendship that ended. "Conservatives would never end a long friendship because someone's political views were different. It just makes me shake my head," she concluded.

This was not Stewart's first public defense of Trump. In July, she  joked  about an AI-generated image showing Trump smoking a cigar while wearing a Trump 2028 hat. "Well, we haven't had a funnier President," she wrote, before asking, "Why are liberals so freaking uptight?"
