Why Flavor Flav Is Betting Big On Women’s Sports With ‘SHE Weekend’ In Las Vegas

For many fans, Flavor Flav will forever be remembered as Public Enemy's energetic hype man, a 2013 Rock N Roll Hall of Fame inductee, the larger-than-life personality behind the iconic clock necklace, or the star of reality television's Flavor of Love .
But over the past two years, Flav has quietly been building a different reputation as an advocate for equity in women's sports.
His latest effort is an investment in visibility, recognition, and celebration for women athletes who often receive far less attention than their male counterparts. This Summer, Flavor Flav is hosting " SHE Weekend " - short for Sports, Hospitality and Entertainment - an upcoming four-day event taking place in Las Vegas alongside MGM, Delta and Dove from July 16 to July 19, honoring elite female athletes and U.S. Olympic champions.
Speaking with me at Cannes Lions in France, Flavor Flav explained that the idea wasn't born in a boardroom. It started with a story.
"It all started with a story the captain of the water polo team put out," he said, referring to U.S. Olympic Water Polo National Team captain Maggie Steffens. A four-time Olympian, she led Team USA to three consecutive gold medals (2012, 2016, 2020) and holds the Olympic record for the most goals scored in a single tournament. "She talked about how they live outside the pool... they have two or three jobs to support themselves."
His manager suggested that he sponsor one athlete.
Instead, Flav had another idea.
"Instead of sponsoring Maggie," he recalled thinking, "why don't I sponsor the whole team?"

Then he did just that. That decision quickly expanded beyond the women's team to sponsor both the men's and women's U.S. Olympic Water Polo programs, introducing sports fans to a side of Flava Flav they hadn't seen before.
But he didn't stop there. After seeing the Men's Olympic Gold medal-winning Hockey Team receive a high-profile White House celebration, and the U.S. Women's Olympic Gold medal-winning Hockey Team get overlooked following its championship victory, Flav believed the women deserved their own moment and took action.
"I said, 'I want to bring you all to Vegas and celebrate you the right way—the way you're supposed to be celebrated,'" And this was the inspirational moment SHE Weekend was born to celebrate Team USA's Women medalists.
What exactly happens at SHE Weekend?
The inaugural event will feature a parade down the Las Vegas Strip, concerts, hospitality experiences, and celebrations honoring Olympic and Paralympic gold medalists. Public Enemy is scheduled to perform alongside artists including Sheila E. and Montell Jordan, with support from entertainment partners and global creative company 72andSunny.
For Flav, however, the weekend isn't really about celebrity appearances. It's about correcting an imbalance.
Women's sports are experiencing unprecedented momentum. Television ratings continue to climb, sponsorship dollars are growing , and leagues like the WNBA have reached new heights of cultural relevance . Yet many Olympic athletes still struggle financially despite representing the United States on the world's biggest stages.
Those realities struck Flav. "There ain't nothing wrong with a little helping hand," he said simply.
His comments reflect a broader shift across professional sports.
Flavor Flav may not fit the traditional image of a sports investor, but perhaps that's exactly the point.

During our conversation, Flav spoke enthusiastically about trying Olympic sports himself—from jumping into a water polo pool to attempting skeleton racing and even joining the U.S. bobsled and skeleton community. While he laughs about those experiences today, they also show genuine curiosity and respect for athletes whose disciplines rarely receive mainstream attention.
When I asked whether SHE Weekend could become an annual tradition, he didn't hesitate.
"I would like to do it every year," he said. "This year will determine what we can do in the future."
That's how nearly every successful institution begins.
"The first Grammy Awards. The first Soul Train Awards. The first BET Awards," Flav reminded me. "Everything starts as a first. But you never know where it ends."
Outside of SHE Weekend, Flavor Flav remains busy on the music front as well. Public Enemy is set to join Guns N' Roses for select U.S. tour dates, following their international tour together, another example of the cross-generational appeal that continues to define their career.

Yet when I asked how he ultimately hopes people remember him, he didn't mention platinum records, television ratings, or sold-out tours.
"I just want people to see me as a hard trier," he said. "Somebody who tried hard and was able to succeed because he tried."
Perhaps that's what makes SHE Weekend resonate. It's easy to support women's sports when they're already winning headlines. It's harder—and arguably more meaningful—to invest before the spotlight fully arrives.
Flavor Flav has built a career by knowing how to get people's attention. Now, he's using that attention to direct it toward athletes who deserve it more.
