'Death of a Unicorn' and 'A Working Man' among new movies in Milwaukee theaters this week

Unicorns, penguins and apparitions take over movie theaters this week. So does the most popular faith-fueled series of the past decade.

Here's what's new in Milwaukee-area theaters starting Friday, as well as some of the new movies available on streaming and on demand this week.

'Death of a Unicorn'

Short version:En route to a Big Pharma CEO's wilderness retreat, a father and daughter hit an actual unicorn with their car. The drug company family sees the beast as a source of expensive miracle drugs, but the unicorn has other ideas. Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, Richard E. Grant, Will Poulter and Téa Leoni star in this dark comedy.

Jason Statham brings his old job's skills to his new job in "A Working Man."

'A Working Man'

Short version:Jason Statham reunites with "Beekeeper" director David Ayer for this action movie about a former black ops expert who finds a peaceful career as a construction worker — until his boss' daughter is taken by human traffickers. Jason Flemyng, Michael Pena and Noemi Gonzalez co-star.

Jesus and his disciples come to Jerusalem, have a showdown with the local religious authorities and break bread together in the fifth season of "The Chosen."

'The Chosen: Last Supper' Part 1

Short version:In the first part of the fifth season of the hugely popular series about the life and teachings of Jesus, Jesus rides into Jerusalem and a collision course with the Jewish high priest. (Part 2 comes to theaters April 4, with Part 3 on April 11.)

An English teacher (Steve Coogan) at a boarding school in 1970s Argentina has a penguin waddle into his life in "The Penguin Lessons."

'The Penguin Lessons'

Short version:In this based-on-a-true-story drama, an Englishman (Steve Coogan) teaching at a boarding school in 1970s Argentina rethinks his life after he saves and adopts a penguin.

'The Woman in the Yard'

Short version:A family finds a woman shrouded in black on their lawn telling them "today's the day," and she might be right. Danielle Deadwyler ("Till") stars in the latest horror thriller from Blumhouse.

'Audrey's Children'

Short version:In this based-on-a-true-story drama, Natalie Dormer plays Audrey Evans, a 1960s doctor who battles the system to develop ways to treat kids with cancer and their families.

'Day of Reckoning'

Short version:A young sheriff teams up with a U.S. marshal to hold a female outlaw against a violent gang led by her husband. Zach Roerig, Billy Zane, Trace Adkins, Scott Adkins and Cara Jade Myers star in this action movie.

Restored 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' at Oriental Theatre

Peter Weir's 1975 Australian New Wave masterpiece "Picnic at Hanging Rock"is showing in a new 4K restoration at the Oriental Theatre at 6 p.m. March 28-30. Tickets are $13. Info: mkefilm.org/oriental-theatre.

Milwaukee Film's David Lynch tribute

Milwaukee Film's David Lynch Retrospective kicks off with "The Short Films of David Lynch,"a program of six shorts the late movie legend made from 1967 to 1995, at 7 p.m. April 2 at the Oriental Theatre. Tickets are $13. Info: mkefilm.org.

Animation in April at Oriental Theatre

Animation in April at the Oriental Theatre celebrates 50 years of beloved animation, starting with two anime classics: 1995's "Ghost in the Shell,"7 p.m. April 3, and 2001's "Cowboy Bebop: The Movie,"9 p.m. April 3-5. Tickets are $13. Info: mkefilm.org.

Latin American Film Series at UWM Union Cinema

The 46th annual Latin American Film Series kicks off April 3 at UWM Union Cinema with "Sujo,"a Mexican drama following the life of the son of a slain cartel gunman, at 7 p.m. April 3. Marcus Theatres' 'Fan Faves'

Marcus Theatres is bringing back popular classics on Sundays and Mondays through May 19. Tickets for the "Fan Faves" are $6, with a passport good for four movies in the series $18. Milwaukee Film's Let's Dig In series

Let's Dig In, a series of movies on environmental issues, continues with "The Story of Plastic"at noon March 29. Screenings include post-movie discussions and even a farmers market in the lobby of the Oriental Theatre, where it's taking place. Tickets are $13. Info: mkefilm.org.

What's showing at UWM Union Cinema

Highlights this week at the UWM Union Cinema, inside the student union at 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., include: "The Decay of Fiction,"shown in a 35-millimeter print, 6 p.m. March 28 and 6:30 p.m. March 29 ($5); and "Hale County This Morning, This Evening,"the Oscar-nominated documentary by RaMell Ross ("Nickel Boys"), 7 p.m. April 2 (free). "Renner":In this horror thriller, Frankie Muniz plays a computer wiz who creates an A.I.-powered life coach to help him find love, only to have it turn on him. Available March 28.

"Meet Cute in Manhattan":An actor's meet-cute with an aspiring architect leads to their casting in an ad for a dating app — and romantic complications. Terence Chen, Kendall Leary and Amanda Shi star in this meta rom-com. Available March 28.

Sofia Carson is confronted by her past as a possible guide for her future in "The Life List."

New movies on streaming services

"The Life List":In this dramedy, Sofia Carson plays a young woman who receives a DVD message from her late mother (Connie Britton) including a list of goals the daughter crafted for herself when she was 13. On Netflix March 28.

"Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip":A Mexican American family who have lost connections to each to other and their heritage goes on a road trip that goes very, very wrong. Eva Longoria, Harvey Guillen and Cheech Marin star. On Disney+ March 28.
