Demi Lovato: ‘Having A Song & Video About Tearing Katy Perry Down, That’s Not Women’s Empowerment’
In her new Glamour interview, Demi Lovato responded to a question about her past comments on Taylor Swift. While addressing the question, Lovato touched on feminism, personal brands, body image issues andKaty Perry.
"Just speaking out. I'm not afraid to talk about the fact that women get paid less than men in the United States and how unfair that is. Talking about it at all is doing the work," Lovato said. "And I think every woman does her part in some way. But I think in certain situations, certain people could be doing more if they're going to claim that as part of their brand. This will probably get in trouble, but I don't see anybody in any sort of squad that has a normal body. It's kind of this false image of what people should look like. And what they should be like, and it's not real."

Lovato also nodded to a "song and video about tearing Katy Perry down," presumably referring to "Bad Blood," which many have taken to be about Perry, although Swift has stated the song is not about her. "I think that having a song and a video about tearing Katy Perry down, that's not women's empowerment. We all do things that aren't, but I have to ask myself, 'Am I content with calling myself a feminist?' Yes, because I speak out," Lovato said.

When the Glamour quotes began spreading on Tuesday morning (Oct. 4), Lovato, 24, tweeted, "Also don't forget that words can be taken out of context when doing interviews.. still not apologizing for saying what everyone want to say." A spokesperson for Lovato could not be reached for further comment on the Glamour interview.
Perry recently said she'd be willing to collaborate with Swift if she apologized. The Glamour interview also has Lovato discussing her breakup with longtime love Wilmer Valderrama, and the images and situations that are triggers for her body image and drug issues.
