How did a pair of North Carolina nurses do on the season premiere of 'The Amazing Race'?

Two Wilmington nurses came to the brink of elimination on the Wednesday, March 5, premiere of long-running CBS reality show competition "The Amazing Race."

At the end of the day, however, Courtney Ramsey and Jasmin "Jazzy" Carey staved off elimination for at least one more week and avoided being one of two teams kicked out of the race on the season premiere, which started in Los Angeles and finished in Hong Kong.

Wearing canary yellow, Ramsey and Carey, who are a couple in addition to being co-workers , joined 13 other teams at the race's starting line at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in L.A.

From there, Ramsey and Carey, who teamed up for a "heart hands" pose in the show's intro, had to drive to the Los Angeles airport without using a phone for directions and catch a flight to Hong Kong. Carey drove and found her way by following other cars, a strategy that worked as they were among the teams boarding the first flight to Hong Kong, with other teams on the next flight about an hour behind.

Once in Hong Kong, the couple marveled at the mountains and then had to make their way up a massive set of stone steps by a giant bronze Buddha to get their first clue.

From there, Carey had to climb a tall bamboo tower to retrieve the next clue while Ramsey looked on pensively. When Carey struggled to reach the top of the slippery tower, Ramsey called out encouragement: "It's always hardest right before the victory!"

The couple then had trouble making it to the next stop in the race, a "fork in the road" that created two parallel seven-team races. A language barrier led to them being the second-to-last team to get a cab, and the second-to-last team to reach the fork.

"Big sigh," Ramsey lamented, once they finally got into the cab.

Then, a nice montage interview recounted how the couple met at Duke University School of Nursing and how Ramsey considers Carey "my forever partner," with pics of them going on hikes together.

Picking "dance" over "sing" at the fork in the road, the two got a cab to their next destination, where they had to learn a traditional Chinese "dragon dance," with one partner as the dragon's costumed head and the other as the tail.

They completed that challenge fairly quickly, finishing just ahead of another team. As part of a three-team scrum at the finish line, or "the mat," Ramsey and Carey were seconds ahead of the last-place team, one of whose members was struggling with a bad knee.

Upon reaching the finish, Ramsey and Carey cried tears of relief.

The couple will be back on "The Amazing Race" 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, for the show's second episode of its 37th season. Episodes air on CBS and can also be streamed on Paramount+.

The 14 teams on this season of "The Amazing Race," hosted by Phil Keoghan, is the most the show has ever had.

Teams will also travel to locations including Osaka, Japan; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; rural Bulgaria; and Strasbourg, France.
