The Running Man is set in an oppressive future where the government controls the media. The story follows Ben Richards (Powell) as he volunteers to participate in a deadly game show, which will see him hunted by professional killers over 30 days. Should he survive, he’ll win a cash prize that will help save his sick child and lift his family out of a horrid living situation.

“We literally just finished shooting less than a week ago,” said Wright.

Powell said, “Probably what I get for asking Tom Cruise for advice on using a stunt double… Now that I’ve gone through fire, I can say I’ve never worked harder on a movie in my life.”

Domingo, who is the announcer in the movie, set up the clip. It’s sleek and futuristic. Interesting to note per Wright, that Stephen King, then writing as Richard Bachman, set the original book in 2025. Trailer opens in a dystopian dumpy metro future. Josh Brolin’s exec is talking Powell’s family man into competing in the world’s biggest reality show (“You’re a fighter, Richards”). The difference between this Running Man and the Arnold Schwarzenegger film, this one takes place out in the real world with Powell’s Richards on the run in an apartment building, getting assaulted by pilots, and juggling grenades thrown at him. Says Domingo’s emcee “The thrill of the hunt! Can you feel it?! This is America goddamit and we don’t put up with no bullshit.” “I’m still here, you shiteaters!” screams Powell toward end of footage.
