The History Museum presents discussion about ‘Better Homes’ with Robinson, resident

SOUTH BEND — The History Museum presents "Insights in History — The Positive Impact of 'Better Homes'" at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 7 at 897 Thomas St.

Gabrielle Robinson , author of "Better Homes of South Bend: An American Story of Courage," and Mike Jackson will be the guest speakers.

Robinson will talk about the successful efforts of a group of African American families who met in secret in 1950 to find a way to build homes in South Bend away from the factories and slums where they were currently living.

She will discuss the discrimination and racism that forced these families to live in the worst parts of town.

The conversation includes the far-reaching effects of this move and why the story of 70 years ago is still important today.

As a member of one of the first families to live in the new "Better Homes," Jackson will describe his experiences growing up there and how it impacted his life.

Both will answer questions from the audience.

A self-guided tour of the Worker's Home , whose new iteration is of a 1950s African American family home, will be offered.

Admission is $3; $1 for members. Reservations are required by Feb. 5.
