Jim James: ‘Modern Country Is Deliberately Dumbing Down the Human Race’
You won't catch Jim James kicking back cold ones and cruising along to Florida Georgia Line anytime soon. Don't look for him bro-ing out in a baseball cap with Luke Bryan , either; that's just not his kind of night.
No, the My Morning Jacket frontman isn't enthralled with the current state of mainstream country music. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone , James opined, "I feel like modern country is deliberately dumbing down the human race. They're deliberately making people take glory in being uneducated and racist, and it's just sad. I think it's absolute mind control."

When asked about My Morning Jacket's lack of a hit song in its catalogue, James was similarly disinterested: "Having a hit would be awesome, but I don't know if it's meant to happen."
He also called pop radio "such a waste of time."
Beck, the Pixies, My Morning Jacket to Headline Boston Calling
If we're keeping score, My Morning Jacket has never had a song reach the Billboard Hot 100 ; their biggest hit on Billboard's rock and alternative charts was "I'm Amazed," which peaked at No. 5 on Adult Alternative Songs .
Even without the support of mainstream outlets, MMJ has carved out an impressive niche for itself as folk-rock festival standbys. Touring behind their new album The Waterfall (due out May 4), the band will hit festivals like Governors Ball and Bonnaroo this summer.
