'How I Met Your Mother' Cast: Where Are They Now?

When it comes to  How I Met Your Mother , one word spurs to mind: legendary! 

From September 2005 to March 2014, the beloved CBS sitcom whisked viewers away to  MacLaren's Pub  and helped skyrocket the careers of  Josh Radnor ,  Cobie Smulders ,  Neil Patrick Harris ,  Alyson Hannigan  and  Jason Segel  across nine seasons. Narrated by the late  Bob Saget as Future Ted, this 10-time  Emmy -winning series saw Ted Mosby (Radnor) recount the story to his two children of how he met their mother — hence the title — through flashbacks of his life in New York City with his close-knit friends.

Following the show's success, a spinoff titled  How I Met Your Father  — starring  Hilary Duff  and  featuring cameos from the original cast  —  ran for two seasons  from 2022 to 2023 before being canceled by Hulu. 

In 2023,  How I Met Your Mother celebrated its 18th anniversary , prompting Radnor to  share a nostalgic throwback photo  of the cast. 

"I am immensely grateful to have been part of a show that continues to mean so much to so many people," Radnor wrote in his caption. "It's hard to fully appreciate something like that in the moment but all these years later I got nothing but love for that show and the people I made it with."

Josh Radnor as Ted Mosby

Radnor played Ted Mosby, an architect living in N.Y.C. with his best friends. Throughout the series, fans rooted for the show's most relatable character, who remained determined to find true love in the big city.

Though he played Mosby on-screen, Full House 's Saget voiced Mosby as the show's narrator. After a nine-season run on the show, Radnor went on to play Dr. Jedediah Foster on the TV drama  Mercy Street,  Adam Epstein in the FX miniseries  Fleishman Is in Trouble and Lonny Flash on the mystery-crime series  Hunters —  in addition to some theater work and releasing several studio albums.

In November 2023, the actor and singer  revealed his engagement  to then-unnamed Jordana Jacobs, a clinical psychologist he had met at his friend's "psychedelic" event. The couple later  tied the knot  in a snow-covered ceremony in January 2024.

Cobie Smulders as Robin Scherbatsky

Smulders played badass TV journalist and proud Canadian Robin Scherbatsky. Fun fact: Scherbatsky was once a child pop star who went by the name of Robin Sparkles, which totally blew the gang's minds (and ours).

The actress went on to  kick more ass as Maria Hill  in various projects of the  Marvel Cinematic Universe  — beginning with  The Avengers  (2012) — joined another crew of friends as Lisa Turner on the TV series  Friends from College and earned other TV credits for  Impeachment: American Crime Story ,  How I Met Your Father  and  High School .

Since 2012, the actress has been married to former  Saturday Night Live cast member  Taran Killam , with whom she shares two daughters,  Shaelyn and Janita .

Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson

Need a wingman? Barney Stinson — played by Harris — was your guy. The ladies' man always wore a suit and lived his life by the bro code (Article 1: Bros before Hoes).

The Emmy winner went on to play Count Olaf on Netflix's  A Series of Unfortunate Events ,  joined the fourth installment  of the  Matrix  franchise and landed the lead on the comedy series  Uncoupled , among other projects. In 2014, he took on the titular role in  Hedwig and the Angry Inch  on Broadway, earning him the  Tony Award  for best leading actor in a musical.

Since 2004, Harris has been in a  relationship with actor and chef David Burtka , with whom he  shares twins Gideon and Harper ; the two  married in Italy  after a decade of dating.

Alyson Hannigan as Lily Aldrin

After appearing in the  American Pie  film series, Hannigan portrayed one-half of the show's fan-favorite couple, Lily Aldrin — a kindergarten teacher–turned–art consultant to the Captain. Lily was married to Marshall "Marshmallow" Eriksen (Segel), and the two eventually welcomed son Marvin and daughter Daisy. (Spoiler alert: On the final episode, Aldrin reveals she's expecting a third.)

Following  HIMYM , Hannigan voiced Claire Clancy on the animated series  Fancy Nancy,  played Dr. Ann Possible in the 2019 Kim Possible  live-action reboot film  and  competed on season 32  of  Dancing with the Stars  in 2023,  finishing in fifth place .

She married her  Buffy the Vampire Slayer costar,  Alexis Denisof , in 2003, and  they share two daughters .

Jason Segel as Marshall Eriksen

Marshall loved his Lilypad.

The other half of the show's treasured pair, played by Segel, was also roommates with Ted when they were college students at Wesleyan University. Introduced as a corporate lawyer in N.Y.C., Eriksen later became a New York State Supreme Court judge.

Segel later starred as Dane Faucheux in the 2019 film  Our Friend  and Paul Westhead on HBO's  Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty . The actor earned an Emmy nomination for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for his performance on  Apple TV+'s  Shrinking , which he co-created with  Bill Lawrence  and  Brett Goldstein .

Following his  split with photographer Alexis Mixter  in 2021 after eight years of dating, Segel started a new relationship with  So You Think You Can Dance  alum  Kayla Radomski .

Cristin Milioti as Tracy McConnell

After seasons and seasons of suspense, Tracy McConnell — played by  Cristin Milioti  — was revealed to be Ted's wife and mother to their two children. Fans eventually found out that McConnell died from an unnamed illness, which prompted Mosby to share with his kids the story of how he met their mother. (And also kicked off one of  the most controversial series finales  ...  ever. )

Milioti expanded her TV résumé with roles on  Fargo ,  The Mindy Project ,  Made for Love  and  The Resort , and co-starred alongside  Andy Samberg  in the 2020 Hulu rom-com  Palm Springs .  According to Deadline , the actress is also set to star opposite  Colin Farrell  as Sofia Falcone on Max's  The Batman  limited spinoff series,  The Penguin.

Lyndsy Fonseca as Penny Mosby

After playing Ted and Tracy's daughter, Penny, Lyndsy Fonseca later appeared on  Agent Carter ,  RePlay  and  9-1-1: Lone Star .

In October 2016, the actress  married her  Nikita  costar, Noah Bean . The couple welcomed two daughters:  Greta  in 2018 and  Evelyn  in 2022.

David Henrie as Luke

Wizards of Waverly Place  star David Henrie took on the role of Ted and Tracy's son, Luke. (In 2024, the actor  reunited with his on-screen dad , Radnor, sharing a photo captioned, "Found my father. Finally.")

In 2020, the Disney Channel alum starred in his feature directorial debut,  This Is the Year , produced by his  WOWP  costar  Selena Gomez . He will also portray a younger version of  Dennis Quaid 's  Ronald Reagan  in the upcoming biopic  Reagan  and to reprise his character alongside Gomez in the  Wizards of Waverly Place  revival .

In April 2017, Henrie and former Miss Delaware Maria Cahill  tied the knot  in an  old Hollywood-inspired ceremony . The couple  have three children together : daughters  Pia  and  Gemma  and son  James .
