We have been treated - perhaps traumatised - to some haute horror films in recent years. The 2026 Academy Awards saw the sublime Sinners nominated for a record 16 Oscars; winning four. Guillermo del Toro's fabulous-looking Frankenstein nabbed an impressive three of the iconic golden statuettes. Amy Madigan won for Best Supporting Actress for her terrifically terrifying turn as Aunt Gladys in Weapons - and it's here where this genre naturally owes itself to heightening our anxieties.

Evil manifests in many malevolent forms. Some villains simply terrify us with their physically monstrous appearance, able to distort their bodies in outrageously otherworldly shapes. Whilst others even have the ability to distort their victim's reality. Some look human enough, but beneath that seemingly benevolent exterior lies a manipulative monster capable of committing the most inhumane and heinous acts imaginable. Then there are those entities who play the classic possession game, making their victims commit the most vile and vicious acts.

The supernatural villains usually survive (here's sinisterly smiling at you, Art the Clown) for franchise purposes, naturally. But on some occasions a truly repulsive villain, especially one who has properly enraged us, will meet a deserved demise, and the grislier the better.
