‘90s Heartthrob Devon Sawa Looks Unrecognizable at Red Carpet Event for New Thriller
Devon Sawa won over a generation of young fans with his starring roles in '90s favorites like Casper and Little Giants , but the actor showed up to a recent public appearance looking noticeably different from those early Hollywood days.
Sawa, 47, is promoting his new film The Girl in the River , a crime thriller costarring Tiffany Haddish , Ralph Macchio , and Maggie Grace . On Thursday, September 3, he appeared at a SAG-AFTRA event with a castmate and the film's director, Brando Benetton , to talk about the movie and his role as a hardened criminologist investigating a child's murder and her twin sister's disappearance.
Dressed in a blue polo sweater, Sawa showed off a leaner, more muscular build than fans may remember from his teen-idol era . One thing that hasn't changed, though, is his piercing stare — the same look that helped define his breakout horror role in Final Destination and his unforgettable turn in Eminem 's "Stan" video.

In 2024, Sawa revealed that he hadn't been the first choice for "Stan."
"They went out to Macaulay Culkin first," he told Entertainment Tonight at the time. "I think that they wanted him, and he wasn't available, or didn't want to do it or whatever."
His career took an unexpected turn a few years later when he stepped back from acting after a string of indie films — several of them were horror movies made in the wake of Final Destination 's success — left him creatively unfulfilled.

"I had done a series of four or five indie movies that I wasn't necessarily proud of," he told Us Weekly in 2017. "Some were horror movies. After Final Destination everybody wanted me to do horror movies and some weren't as good as others. I was just burnt out."
It took an audition request for Mark Wahlberg 's 2008 film Max Payne to reignite his passion.
"I did really well and the casting director wanted to meet me and I did," he said. "I thought, 'You know what, this is what I love. This is what I really want to do.' So I don't know why I stepped away in the first place."
