The rumors are true--Fox McCloud, protagonist of Nintendo's Star Fox, will be in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The film's official social media account confirmed his appearance by sharing a character poster for the anthropomorphic pilot.
It's unknown who will voice him or how prominent Fox's role will be, but the fact that he has his own poster seems to indicate that it'll be more than just a cameo. The poster also features his signature Arwing aircraft in the background. With Mario and friends being new to galaxy traversal, Fox makes a lot of sense as a cosmic guide and traveling companion.
Fox's appearance will come nearly 10 whole years after the release of the last new Star Fox game, the often-maligned Star Fox Zero for Wii U--unless you count the belated release of Star Fox 2 in 2017 for the SNES Classic microconsole. The character last showed up in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2018. The first Super Mario Bros. movie made a nod to the Star Fox franchise by featuring an Arwing figure in Mario's apartment. Being in the new Mario movie will certainly energize the Star Fox fanbase, who have been craving a new game in the series.
Internet sleuths thought they saw Fox in one of the movie's earlier trailers, albeit mostly cut off from the frame. Naysayers argued that what they thought was Fox's arm and leg was just Toad's backpack lying on the ground. With official confirmation, Fox truthers now have the right to do laps around those doubters. It would be unsurprising if the movie referenced some famous and meme-able lines from the Star Fox series--which character will have the honor of yelling "do a barrel roll" or "use the boost to get through?"
Fox won't be the only non-Mario Nintendo IP to appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, as a promotional video implied that Pikmin will show up in the animated film . These crossovers will probably support fan hopes and theories that Nintendo is building a cinematic universe of its own that could culminate in some sort of Super Smash Bros. movie. It fits with the company's strategy of a "consistent release cadence" for films based on its properties, along with "video content" beyond feature films .
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie lands in theaters on April 1.
