Michael B Jordan won the Academy Award for Best Actor on Sunday night for his dual performance as twin brothers in Ryan Coogler's "Sinners," marking his first Oscar win in his first nomination.

The 39-year-old actor's victory was by no means guaranteed. The fight for the best actor trophy was fiercely competitive this year, pitting Jordan against formidable contenders like Timothée Chalamet ("Marty Supreme") and Wagner Moura ("The Secret Agent"). Chalamet picked up early momentum after scooping up prizes from the Golden Globes and the Critics' Choice Awards. But the vibes seemed to shift after Jordan pulled an upset at the Screen Actors Guild's Actor Awards.

Clearly overwhelmed, Jordan thanked God, his mother, and his father who flew in from Ghana for the event, before going on to praise director Ryan Coogler for “betting on a culture”, and his original ideas and artistry. He also took a moment to thank the giants who came before him — Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry and more black legends.

The room erupted in applause and everyone (including Chalamet in the front row) was on their feet.

Jordan's Actor Awards win on March 1 — where he defeated Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, and Jesse Plemons — immediately reshuffled the Oscar race. Presenter Viola Davis couldn't contain her enthusiasm and let out a joyful scream as she read Jordan's name from the envelope. That speech became the turning point of his campaign.

"Mom, thank you for driving me back and forth to New York when we didn't have enough money to go through the Holland Tunnel," Jordan said at the Actor Awards, making eye contact with his mother Donna in the audience. "When we were looking for gas money, parking spaces, when I went up there for my auditions, thank you."

Twenty seconds. The room understood exactly what that meant and how far the distance was between that tunnel and the stage he was standing on.

Jordan's win makes him the first dual-role Best Actor winner in Oscar history, playing twin brothers Smoke and Stack who return home to the South after World War I to open a juke joint, only for vampires to descend on their small Mississippi Delta town.

The victory caps a monumental night for "Sinners," which entered the ceremony with a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations — the most in Academy Awards history. The film had already won Best Original Screenplay (Ryan Coogler), Best Cinematography (Autumn Durald Arkapaw, the first woman to win the category), and Best Original Score (Ludwig Göransson).

Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another" earned the second most nominations with 13, and went head-to-head with "Sinners" in major categories including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Director.

Jordan's path to the Oscar stage began in Newark, New Jersey. At the NAACP Image Awards just a day before his Actor Awards win, he won Entertainer of the Year and Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture, dedicating his award to Chadwick Boseman and declaring, "I love being Black."

"I was thinking about what 'lead actor' meant to me, and honestly, I gotta dedicate this award to Chadwick Boseman," Jordan declared while calling him "my brother." He added, "Our time on this planet is short."

"Sinners" is the fifth collaboration between Jordan and director Ryan Coogler, following "Fruitvale Station," "Creed," and two "Black Panther" movies. The film has been a box office hit with $369 million globally.

No performer has ever won the Oscar for best actor with only a SAG win as their lone televised precursor — with one notable asterisk. Roberto Benigni accomplished it for "Life Is Beautiful" (1998), though it should be noted that BAFTA voting took place after the Oscars in that era, making the comparison less clean.

Michael B Jordan is the latest addition to a Best Actor club that has historically favored older white actors. His win follows a season where momentum shifted dramatically in the final weeks before voting closed on March 5.
