Popular 2025 Horror Film Named Among 'Best Witch Movies' of All Time
With the upcoming release of Practical Magic 2 , it's worth looking back at some of the most popular witch movies of all time. One of the first to come to mind for many is The Wizard of Oz and its many iterations, including Wicked . But there's another film released last year that involves witchcraft that some fans of the genre might overlook.
In a list compiled by Entertainment Weekly naming the best witch movies, Weapons appears in the article as the most recent witch movie released to make the best-of list. The premise of the movie involves a classroom of children running out of their homes in the same direction in the middle of the night. The actor who had the most memorable performance was Amy Madigan, who played a witch named Gladys. She won an Oscar for her portrayal, and her makeup became one of the most popular Halloween costumes last year.
Gladys wasn't the typical witch. In some ways she was much more evil. She says, at one point in the movie to Alex, the one child from the class who didn't run out of his home at night, "I can make your parents hurt themselves. I can make them hurt each other. I can make them eat each other if I want to."
Other movies that made EW 's list are the 1942 film I Married a Witch , starring Veronica Lake; the 1987 hit The Witches of Eastwick , featuring an all-star cast of Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Sarandon, and Cher as the witches and Jack Nicholson in a "larger-than-life performance"; and Hocus Pocus (1993), which stars another trio of witches played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy.
Practical Magic 2 will be released next week, 28 years after the movie adaptation of the book aired in 1998. Weapons , directed by Zach Cregger, could be in line for a sequel as well, with potentially far less of a wait. If there is another Weapons , chances are Madigan's witch Gladys will be at the center of the story.
