Brian Wilson Reveals the Deep Meaning Behind His Most Personal Song 'Till I Die'
  • Brian Wilson shared the inspiration behind his deeply personal song "Till I Die," which he wrote after feeling insignificant compared to the vastness of the ocean.

In 1971, Brian Wilson penned what he would call his most personal song for the Beach Boys, a tune that remains one of his most intimate and revealing recordings.

In an audio clip posted to his official Facebook page, Wilson shared the story behind the deeply personal song "Till I Die." He discussed how a trip to the seaside inspired the tune featured on the LP Surf's Up .

Wilson explained, "I was sitting by the ocean one day. I got a feeling that, like, I was almost nothing compared to the immensity of the ocean. I said, 'I'm gonna write a song called 'I'm a cork on the ocean.'' That's how it started."

"The first part of it [was the lyrics], 'I'm a cork on the ocean, floating over the raging sea.' Then I thought, 'How deep is the ocean?' Each line and paragraph created the next one. I kept going like that [until the song was written]."

The song was one of the very few Beach Boys tunes credited solely to Wilson. It stood out as a deeply personal work that has been widely interpreted as offering insight into Wilson's emotions and his battle with mental illness.

According to Biography , Wilson suffered a nervous breakdown in 1967 and subsequently battled depression . Wilson was eventually diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.

He told Ability Magazine in 2006 that he suffered from auditory hallucinations. "When I was on stage, I could hear voices telling me negative things about myself. Even today, when I sing, I have to force myself not listen to them. But when the concert is over, the voices come back." Wilson admitted he didn't get treatment for his mental health issues until he turned 40.

In 2019, the singer and songwriter shared that he had to postpone a regularly scheduled tour due to "not feeling like myself." He wrote in a Facebook post, "It is with great regret that I need to postpone my upcoming June tour."

"It is no secret that I have been living with mental illness for many decades. There were times when it was unbearable but with doctors and medications I have been able to live a wonderful, healthy and productive life with support from my family, friends and fans who have helped me through this journey."

He revealed that in 2019, he endured three back surgeries, and explained that after his final procedure, he started feeling "strange, and it's been pretty scary for awhile. I was not feeling like myself. Mentally insecure is how I'd describe it. We're not sure what is causing it, but I do know that it's not good for me to be on the road right now, so I'm heading back to Los Angeles."

Wilson retired from touring in 2022. He died on June 11, 2025 at 82.

"Til I Die" stands as a hauntingly honest reflection of Brian Wilson's inner struggles, capturing his feelings of vulnerability and isolation during a turbulent period of his life. The song remains a testament to his ability to transform personal pain into timeless music .
