Nick Jonas Shares Why Burning Up Was the Right Era for the Jonas Brothers to Revisit amid Latest Tour (Exclusive)

The Jonas Brothers are Burning Up All Over Again for good reason. 

Following three sold-out nights at Madison Square Garden in New York City in August, Nick , Joe and Kevin Jonas are bringing their Burning Up Tour All Over Again nationwide nearly 20 years after the first Burning Up Tour. 

Ahead of the tour's continuation on Sept. 25 in Boston, Nick, 33, chatted with PEOPLE about why this era of the band's career — 2008's A Little Bit Longer, which featured the song 'Burnin Up' — felt like the right one to revisit this year. 

"As we approached the new music process actually, we found that we were being really drawn to the sound of the early albums that we made, the self-titled album and A Little Bit Longer ," Nick said days before the Jonas Brothers latest single "Listen When Sad" debuted.  "And specifically A Little Bit Longer , there were elements of our songwriting that were really coming back full circle. Obviously, we've all grown and we've gone through musical changes and evolution, but I think you always can tap back into those fundamentals and the DNA of who you are as songwriters."

"And when we got in the room to write some of this music, we just found ourselves being really pulled back to that direction to that early pop punk emo sound —but done in a new way. And so as we looked at that, we also said, 'What's a show that we could bring back to life and also evolve and turn it into a new experience?' And it all just made sense for it to be the Burning Up Tour All Over Again and for the new music to align with that."

As the band took the stage for the first official night of the tour on Aug. 20 at MSG, fans were taken on a trip back in time as the brothers sported nearly identical outfits from the first tour . Nick credited the trio's stylist Sydney Lopez with finding pieces that were "a little bit of a tip of the cap, but didn't go full costume."

"She did a great job of threading that needle," he says.  "And it was funny though, just looking back at some of the outfit choices of course, and thinking 'Why was that what I was doing then?' And that's part of the fun of growing though is that you live and you learn, you discover who you are, what makes you who you are, and it's all the things that you're proud of and the ones that over time you kind of go, 'Huh, that's a bit of a head scratcher.'"

Before taking the stage in Boston, the band is heading down under to headline the halftime show for the NFL's first-ever regular season game in Australia on Sept. 11. The game between the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams will be streamed on Netflix Sept. 10 at 8:35 p.m. EST. 

"It's kind of all the things I love," Nick, who recently teamed up with DraftKings for their latest campaign celebrating the app now being available in 50 states, said.  "It's football and a country that I've loved playing in over the years and connecting all those dots of sports fans with fans of ours and fans all over the world with Netflix will be a really special way to kick off football season." 

After the show in Melbourne, they'll be on the road until Dec. 22, with a final show planned for Newark, N.J. 

"The fact that we're able to bring that show all over the country now is going to be pretty special," Nick says of the tour. "And it's just a perfect timing type thing — an idea that inspired all of us and that really seemed to connect with the fans — and I'm thrilled with the response."
