Oops: ‘90s singer gets name misspelled on re-release of hit album

What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us, making the occasional typo?

"One of Us" singer Joan Osborne called out her record label Friday after her hit '90s album was re-released with her name misspelled. A remastered version of her multi-platinum 1995 album "Relish," is out now, but the side of the CD shows her last name incorrectly spelled as "Osbourne."

"We've come to the portion of the story where the record company misspells my name on the re-release," Osborne wrote on Facebook . She also added the hashtag #NoRelationToOzzy, just in case anyone thought late rock legend Ozzy Osbourne is a distant relative.

Osborne reissued "Relish" in September to celebrate the 30th anniversary of her debut album, which went triple platinum and was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards. Osborne was also nominated for Best New Artist and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, while "One of Us" (written by Eric Bazilian) was nominated for Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. (Alanis Morissette won Album of the Year and for Best Female Rock Vocal at the 1996 Grammys, while Seal won Song and Record of the Year with "Kiss from a Rose" and Annie Lennox took home the Best Female Pop Vocal prize.)

It's unclear when Osborne first realized Mercury Records made the error, but the picture of the re-released CD on Amazon even shows the mistake before you buy it.

"This will make this release super valuable. I recommend everyone snap 'em up while they can!" one fan wrote on Facebook.

"Would have loved to hear you sing Crazy Train with Ozzy!!" another wrote.

"Maybe they'll send you one of his royalty checks too!" a third joked.

"The first time I heard you on the radio in 1995, the DJ introduced the artist as Joanne Osborne. For the first few months, thats how I pronounced your name," a fourth said.

Osborne, 63, is a singer-songwriter known for her mix of folk, rock, pop and blues music. She's sometimes referred to as a one-hit wonder — "One of Us" hit No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and has more than 200 million streams on Spotify today — but Osborne also released 12 other albums in her career, plus performed with the Funk Brothers, The Dead and Trigger Hippy.

"One of Us" enjoyed extended popularity, too, as it was sung by Tom Cruise in "Vanilla Sky" and by Mike Myers in an "Austin Powers" movie, plus it was used as the theme song for the 2000s TV series "Joan of Arcadia." The rest of the "Relish" album also features the Grammy-nominated "St. Teresa," a cover of Bob Dylan 's "Man in the Long Black Coat," and a the song "Lumnia," which was featured in "The Sopranos" in 1999 and "The Good Wife" in 2013.

"I have had other artists and other musicians come up to me and say it was a real sort of touchstone record for them. But I think maybe in my experience it's more of an emotional legacy, because I have people come up to me on a regular basis when I'm on the road or even at a cocktail party or something," Osborne said of the album's legacy. "People will come up and they'll single out a particular song and they'll say what that song really meant to them in their lives. I've had people who were growing up gay in a small town in Idaho come up to me and be in tears about how the record really saved their life. How they knew that there was another way of looking at themselves other than the way that their community thought of them."

Osborne is currently on tour, with upcoming "Dylanology Live" concerts in Upstate New York on June 4 at the JCC Hart Theater in Rochester, July 24 at the Center for the Arts in Homer , and Aug. 8 at Assembly in Kingston. Tickets are available via joanosborne.com .
