Pop star newcomer reveals her breakout single was nearly cut from album. ‘I wasn’t sure about it.’

Singer and songwriter Olivia Dean revealed that her massive hit " Man I Need " was not originally intended for release as a single due to her personal reservations.

During an interview on Monday with Hits Radio, the 27-year-old artist explained that she loved the song's energy but questioned if the song fit the narrative of her debut album, " The Art of Loving ," People reported .

"I wasn't sure about it. I thought it was a little bit different," Dean told the radio host Marvin Humes . "Then we started playing it in rehearsals and some of my band were like, 'This one's good you know.' And I was like, 'You know what, yeah.'"

Dean revealed that she changed her mind after performing the track in rehearsals and receiving strong encouragement from her bandmates, according to Billboard .

"It wasn't that. I knew I really liked it but I didn't know if it was representative of the whole album and the story," Dean said. "But I'm glad I followed through with that one. There was definitely loads of songs that didn't make the album but I might still do something with them," People reported.

The song design began with a drum beat aimed at capturing the danceable spirit of Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel," a sound Dean eventually realized others would enjoy after she found herself listening to the demo repeatedly, according to People.

"I just remember driving to and from the studio at the weekend and I just played it again and again and again and again and again and again," Dean said. "And I was like, 'Okay, well if I can listen to this again and again I think other people might want to,'" People reported.

The decision to release the track proved successful as it reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and established Dean as the first woman to top the Billboard's Adult Pop, Pop, and Adult R&B Airplay charts simultaneously since Adele, according to Billboard.

Beyond her recent Best New Artist win at this Grammys, the singer teased that she may eventually release further unreleased material and also shared her interest in potentially competing on the BBC show " Strictly Come Dancing ," NME reported .
