‘Rhythm of the Night’ Singer James DeBarge, Who Once Married Janet Jackson, Arrested with His Brother Chico

R&B stars James and Chico DeBarge, members of the famed musical family, were arrested on drug charges.

The brothers were taken into custody after police in Burbank, Calif., conducted a traffic stop at around 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 27 for "violations of the California Vehicle Code," a law enforcement source confirms to PEOPLE.

The source tells PEOPLE that James DeBarge was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance, while Jonathan "Chico" DeBarge was arrested on the same charge and on an outstanding warrant. Further details were not provided. It's unclear if they have entered pleas or retained attorneys to speak on their behalf.

According to NBC 4 , which was first to report the news, James, 63, was driving a Chevy Tahoe that was spotted towing a Nissan SUV with Chico, 60, inside, police said. Neither vehicle had license plates and police allegedly found drugs at the scene, the outlet reported, citing police.

The brothers are members of the DeBarge family, whose R&B group DeBarge rose to fame in the 1980s with hits including "Rhythm of the Night" and "All This Love."

James was also briefly married to Grammy-winning singer Janet Jackson , who was 18 when they wed in 1984. Jackson later described him as "a sweet guy" but said in the 2022 Lifetime and A&E documentary Janet that his frequent alleged drug use ultimately contributed to the end of their marriage, which lasted about a year.

"I was just incredibly innocent," Jackson said of their time together. "That's the thing, is the innocence. And it's just hurtful for someone to see that and just try to take advantage of it … It's still painful."
