A rock band is releasing its first new album in 30 years, featuring a new lead singer.

Sublime announced "Until the Sun Explodes," their first full-length album of new material since 1996's self-titled album. It will also be their first official release with frontman Jakob Nowell, the son of original lead singer Bradley Nowell, alongside original members Eric Wilson on bass and Bud Gaugh on drums.

According to a press release, the record will be released June 12 and features collaborations with H.R. of Bad Brains, Fletcher Dragge of Pennywise, G. Love, and more. The music is described as rooted in the band's classic sound while the title track, the lead single, pays tribute to Bradley, who died in 1996.

"The last Sublime record that will ever be made is 'Self-Titled,'" Jakob said in a statement. "There's no replacing history, period. 'Until the Sun Explodes' the album is an epilogue, and 'Until the Sun Explodes' the single is the epilogue to the epilogue. It is a tribute to the expansive works of Sublime, it is an acknowledgment for all that my father has done for me my entire life, and most importantly it is a thank you. I love you dad, and I owe you my life."

An accompanying music video for "Until the Sun Exploes" also gives a nod to Sublime's history, including various locations in Long Beach and appearances by skateboard legends Christian Hosoi and Omar Hassan.

"This song... expresses the gratitude we all feel as well as our intent for the future of our band and the music we love! 'Until the Sun Explodes' is our reality," Gaugh said. "Thank you for enjoying life with us!"

Jakob Nowell, who performed in Syracuse in 2024, has been performing for more than a decade with acts like LAW and Jakob's Castle. Sublime continued to perform after Bradley Nowell's death as Sublime With Rome, but Jakob took over as Sublime's lead singer after the band parted ways with frontman Rome Ramirez in 2023.

Sublime is known for its mix of punk, ska, reggae, hip-hop and alternative rock on fan favorites like "What I Got," "Santeria," "Wrong Way," "Doin' Time," "Badfish," "Smoke Two Joints" and "April 29, 1992 (Miami)." Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose in May 1996, two months before their multi-platinum "Sublime" album was released; Jakob was just 11 months old at the time.

A variety of Sublime live recordings, rarities and remixes have been posthumously released over the years, most recently with the 2023 release of a concert dubbed "$5 At the Door (Live at Tressel Tavern 1994)." A sample of Bradley Nowell's voice was also featured on the 2001 song "Sunny Hours" by Long Beach Dub Allstars and will.i.am (of Black Eyed Peas).

Sublime With Rome released several albums with original songs, but none were ever released under the name Sublime.

Jakob Nowell told Rolling Stone last year that he spent a week with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and producer John Feldmann to work on the project. Nowell said it would include brand-new songs that pay "respect and homage" to Sublime's original sound, plus works based on his dad's unfinished ideas and demo recordings.

Sublime also has more than two dozen tour dates scheduled this year, including a July 24 concert at the Great South Bay Music Festival in Patchogue, N.Y. Tickets are available via StubHub and Vivid Seats .
