Roger Goodell shares thoughts on Bad Bunny as Super Bowl 60 halftime performer
Roger Goodell voiced his support for Bad Bunny as the Super Bowl 60 halftime performer despite significant backlash since it was announced in September.
During his annual Super Bowl press conference, the NFL commissioner was asked about Bad Bunny's upcoming performance.
"Listen, Bad Bunny is, and I think that was demonstrated (Sunday) night (at the Grammys), one of the great artists in the world. That's one of the reasons we chose him," Goodell said.
"But the other reason is he understood the platform he was on, and that this platform is used to unite people and to be able to bring people together with their creativity, with their talent, and to be able to use this moment to do that," he continued. "I think artists in the past have done that, I think Bad Bunny understands that, and I think he'll have a great performance."
Bad Bunny has been an open critic of President Donald Trump and his policies. Trump said in an interview with Newsmax that he has never heard of Bad Bunny and the decision for him to perform at the Super Bowl was "absolutely ridiculous."
Bad Bunny, who sings in Spanish, revealed he skipped the United States on his recent 31-date residency in Puerto Rico because he didn't want US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to potentially raid the venues he was at.
During his acceptance speech at the Grammys, Bad Bunny called out ICE.
"Before I say thanks to God, I'm going to say ICE out. We're not savages, we're not animals, we're not aliens, we are humans and we are Americans," he said . "The hate gets more powerful with more hate. The only thing that's more powerful than hate is love. So please, we need to be different. If we fight, we have to do it with love."
When asked whether Goodell expects ICE operations around Levi's Stadium, the commissioner said security is a big focus.
"Security is obviously one of the things we focus on the most," he said. "I see no change in that in the preparations for the Super Bowl."
