Song to get you through the week: 'Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),' by Eddie Japan feat. Ruby Rose Fox

First off, let's start with the patently obvious: Ruby Rose Fox should sing from the Motown/Phil Spector songbook all the time. It suits her low, smoky voice immensely, as evidenced by her vocals on the Spector-penned "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," with Fox filling the shoes of the great Darlene Love.

But this one is hardly a solo show, and Fox is teamed not only with the massive Boston band Eddie Japan but also with guitarist Doug Orey of The Field Effect. That's 15 musicians on one '60s holiday classic, and yet the vibe is absolutely perfect, emulating Spector's famed "Wall of Sound" without feeling forced or contrived. All the instruments fit together marvelously, and Eddie Japan lead vocalist David Santos' vocals are rich and warm. He and Fox have a natural harmony that unfolds with seeming ease.

The problem with beloved classics is that there's really nowhere to hide, but, thankfully, this veritable mob of musicians has nothing to worry about. It's a joyous little number that does justice to the original. A perfect song to ring in the season.
