Comment of the Week: ‘She Sells Her Music to Elevators’
Shania Twain made her feelings about feminism clear this week—and That Didn’t Impress a Dear Reader Much.
♫♪ Da, daaaaa, da, da, da, daa—da. Let's go, readers. ♫♪
Sorry. Kind of. But how else to sound the alarms on further mention of " Shania Twain May Feel Like a Woman, But NOT a Feminist ," referring to the 224-award-winning singer-songwriter who's been making her feelings clear (read: unclear) on being a so-called "feminist icon"?
To recap: in a Times interview last week, Twain called the F-word a "tricky" one for her, adding that while she herself doesn't consider herself a feminist, she agrees with everything a feminist might, i.e. their "values or morals." Oh, she feels like a ~contrarian~. ♫♪
Still, no matter how much control Twain wants to exert over her music slash image slash (gulp) ties to feminism, there's no denying she's created anthems that are now immortalized as the very fabric tying together karaoke rooms, drag bars, wedding dance floors—and, according to our top commenter, @JoyFree, of the week……… elevators.
Who looks up to her? She's not a feminist or icon. She sells her music to elevators.
Yeowch. ♫♪ I feel like that's the worst accolade you can get as a singerrrrr! ♪
We made this point on Monday and we'll repeat it here, but the pipeline from not-a-feminist to describing-yourself-as-a-feminist is a tale as old as time . And Ms. Shania… c'mon. That Don't Impress Me Much was never meant to be a personal philosophy.
