Pomfret, CT, man is on Jeopardy!'s Second Chance Competition: How to watch
After 25 years of auditions, John Guszkowski of Pomfret finally got his opportunity to appear on "Jeopardy!"
His son Gus Guszkowski was a 2022 "Jeopardy!" National College Championship quarterfinalist. He put in a good word for his father to the contestant coordinators, which helped him get on the show.
"Hey next time my dad auditions, give him a shot," Gus Guszkowski told the contestant coordinators.
John held his own during his original appearance on "Jeopardy!" that aired on Jan. 26, 2023. He finished second out of three contestants, with a final score of $33,300.
"I think I did very well given the circumstances," John said. "I was competing against a guy named Troy Meyer, who is widely considered one of the best trivia minds in the world, who had never been on 'Jeopardy!' before. He was in the midst of a six-day victory run. Given that, I had a shot to beat him and finish with over $30,000 in winnings."

John Guszkowski competes on Season 39 'Jeopardy!' Second Chance Competition
But John's "Jeopardy!" career did not end there.
He was announced among the 36 contestants returning for the Season 39 "Jeopardy!" Second Chance Competition. The field consisted of players who did not win during their initial appearance on the show, but whose performances convinced the producers that they have what it takes to win if given a second chance.
The Second Chance event consists of four competitions airing from Dec. 19 to Jan. 15. The winner of each week will take home $35,000 and punch their ticket to the Season 39 "Jeopardy!" Champions Wildcard competition. Champions Wildcard features players who won one or two games last season returning to compete for a spot in the 2024 Tournament of Champions.
John's appearance in the Second Chance Competition has been filmed. Though he signed a non-disclosure agreement and is unable to say the results, he noted that viewers will be entertained.
"It is a great game," he said.
