‘Queen Sugar’ Takes Wide View With Season 3 Key Art & BTS Video

Queen Sugar returns for its third season with a two-night premiere on May 29 and 30, featuring a new perspective and aesthetic with the addition of Afrofuturism-inspired key art.
Photographer Osborne Macharia, known for his work on Black Panther, was brought in by creator Ava DuVernay to infuse his digital editing technique into the Season 3 visuals of the OWN series.
The Warner Horizon Scripted TV-produced Queen Sugar, based on a 2014 book by Natalie Baszile, continues to explore themes of family, race, and class with an all-female directing team and a cast led by Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner, and Kofi Siriboe.

EXCLUSIVE:Back for its third season with a two-night premiere on May 29 and 30 , Queen Sugar revealed a new perspective of sorts with some key art released today.

As the striving Bordelon siblings, their offspring, family and significant others look upward, the Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey executive produced OWN series aims to kick it up a notch or two this year.

In that vein, Oscar nominee and QS creator DuVernay asked photographer Osborne Macharia to bring his style of "Afrofuturism," to the series' Season 3 aesthetic. Having worked with the likes of Marvel on Black Panther , the New Orleans Queen Sugar shoot earlier this year was the first stateside session for Cannes Lion Award winner Macharia. Emphasizing principle of fiction, culture and identity via inclusion and narrative, it is pretty clear why DuVernay thought Nairobi-born Macharia's digital editing technique was a good fit for this latest installment of the now Kat Candler showrun Queen Sugar .

Back again with an all female directing team, Queen Sugar stars Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner and Kofi Siriboe as siblings trying to do right by their deceased father's farm and legacy. That premise is of course the rural launch pad for an often-penetrating look at modern America, family bonds and issues of gender, race and class. With Tina Lifford, Omar J. Dorsey and Dondré T. Whitfield among the cast too, the Warner Horizon Scripted TV-produced and Louisiana set Queen Sugar is based on the 2014 book of the same name by Natalie Baszile .
