RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Frozen’ Special OK For ABC, ‘America’s Got Talent’ & ‘Extreme Weight Loss’ Down
- ABC's special "The Story Of Frozen: Making A Disney Animated Classic" had an OK result in adults 18-49, but was down 21% from the previous week's Bachelor In Paradise episode.
NBC has the NFL 2014 season kickoff on Thursday but last night ABC had Elsa, Anna and the rest of the Frozen gang – though they didn't exactly score a TV touchdown. From 8-9 PM, the network ran its heavily promoted The Story Of Frozen: Making A Disney Animated Classic special (1.1/4). While an OK result in adults 18-49 and up 18% in summer viewers in the slot, the special surrounding the blockbuster pic was down 21% from what the two-hour Bachelor In Paradise drew last week, The Frozen special was tied for second in its time slot with NBC's Food Fighters and behind the NCIS (1.3/4) repeat on CBS. The Frozen ratings chill seemed to spill over to lead-out Extreme Weight Loss (0.8/3). In preliminary ratings, the two-hour reality show tumbled 20% from its last original August 19 to match a series low.
While CBS, Fox and the CW were all encores Tuesday, NBC rolled out a full primetime plate. First up was the Adam Richman-hosted Food Fighters (1.1/4), which was even with its August 26 episode. Next up was the main course America's Got Talent (1.8/6). With AGT' s Season 9 in its final weeks heading toward the September 17 finale, this is usually where a ratings uptick kicks in for Howard Stern and the other judges. However, despite performances last night by the final set of semifinalists, a bump wasn't the case: AGT fell 14% from last week to a new series low. With the live AGT commonly seeing adjustments in the final numbers, that may change later today.

Still, AGT was easily the night's highest-rated show to help garner NBC the top spot overall with a 1.5/5 rating. With the 8 PM NCIS repeat getting 10.33 million viewers and a 9 PM encore of the procedural pulling in the top audience of the night with 10.55 million, CBS took the No. 1 spot viewership-wise with 9.41 million.
