Samantha Jones Will (Briefly) Put the Sex Back in the City

At long last, sex is returning to the city. Max (née HBO Max) decided to ring in Pride Month with the jaw-dropping reveal that Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones will be making a one-night-only return to  And Just Like That…

The catch is that the iconic Jones will only appear in one scene in the season finale, per  Variety , which broke the news on Wednesday afternoon. Cattrall, who has  famously said that she doesn't want to be in a situation for even an hour where she's not enjoying herself, reportedly filmed her dialogue on March 22 in New York City without seeing or speaking to the rest of the cast or showrunner Michael Patrick King. The scene will reportedly feature a phone call between Jones and Carrie Bradshaw, who exchanged a series of fraught texts throughout the first season of  And Just Like That…,  culminating in a promise to meet up.

This is somewhat of a 180 for Cattrall, who told  Variety last year that she decided not to reprise her role as Jones because "it's a great wisdom to know when enough is enough."

"I also didn't want to compromise what the show was to me," she said. "The way forward seemed clear." (We have to imagine that in order for Cattrall to have compromised what the show was to her, this must be one of the most expensive long-distance phone calls of all time.)

Cattrall was reportedly convinced by Casey Bloys, the CEO and chairman of HBO and Max content, who asked about her interest in playing Samantha again while the show was shooting in New York this past winter. The second season of  And Just Like That… will premiere on June 22, but Samantha stans will have to wait until August for that pivotal scene to air. (Fret not though:  Glamorous on Netflix, coincidentally starring Cattrall, also premieres the 22nd.)

Perhaps capitalizing on the newfound Samantha hype, Max dropped a new trailer for the upcoming season of  And Just Like That… on Thursday morning.

In the brief video, we hear Carrie saying in voiceover, "You don't move on because you're ready to. You move on because you've outgrown who you used to be." And while that would seem to be a nod to the fact that she's finally moving on from her grief over Big's sudden passing, it also reads as a touch ironic considering that for some reason, this season will see Carrie and Aiden reuniting.

But God willing, they won't be the only inevitably toxic couple on the show: the trailer even gives us a tiny hint at drama brewing between Miranda and Che, the queer couple we simply love to hate

Regardless of how things actually shake out for our favorite ladies and theydies this season, we're looking forward to the perfectly smooth-brained summer viewing that  And Just Like That… is destined to be.
