Snowbelt Symphony Orchestra to present 'Simply Strings...and Tuba'

Feb. 10—The Snowbelt Symphony Orchestra will present "Simply Strings...and Tuba" at 4 p.m. Feb. 18 at New Promise Church, 8671 Euclid Chardon Road in Kirtland.

The concert, using only the strings of the orchestra, will feature local tuba soloist J.c. Sherman in the Concertino for Tuba and String Orchestra by Jan Koetsier. The orchestra will also be performing Holst's St. Paul's Suite and the Serenade for Strings by Antonin Dvorak.

The concert will be conducted by Snowbelt Musical Arts Association founder Greg Hillis.

Tuba soloist Sherman has been called a "jack of all brass," according to a news release.

As a concert soloist, he has traveled nationally and internationally with his tuba. Regionally, Sherman has performed with every major ensemble in Northeast and North Central Ohio on a full variety of brass instruments, the release stated.

He is currently principal tubist of the Firelands Symphony Orchestra, acting bass trombonist of the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, and instructor of Low Brass at Cleveland State University.

As an artisan, Sherman builds, repairs, and restores antique brass instruments and mouthpieces for clients worldwide, while also introducing artists and audiences to his collection of unusual and historic instruments. He makes his home in Painesville Township.

Tickets for the "Simply Strings...and Tuba" concert are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors, and $8 for students. Tickets can be purchased at www.snowbeltmusical.org .

The Snowbelt Symphony Orchestra is a new 33-player fully-professional orchestra bringing live classical music performances to Lake and Geauga counties. The orchestra next performs on April 22 with a concert featuring music of Beethoven and Wagner.
