49 Years Ago Today, Captain & Tennille’s TV Variety Show Was Canceled After 20 Episodes
  • The Captain and Tennille variety show, starring Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille, was canceled after just 20 episodes due in part to Dragon's discomfort with being on television.

In the 1970s, TV variety shows were all the rage. Everyone from Donny and Marie to Cher to the Brady Bunch had one. But one show was short-lived, in part, due to one of the stars' awkwardness over the variety TV format.

On March 14, 1977, The Captain and Tennille variety show was canceled after just 20 episodes. Starring then-married musical duo Daryl Dragonand Toni Tennilleof "Love Will Keep Us Together" fame, the show premiered on ABC on September 20, 1976, and featured comedy sketches, musical numbers, and big-name guest stars.

The show was not a ratings bomb. In Dragon's 2019 obituary, it was noted that the notoriously quiet musician felt uncomfortable with being on television. Turns out his "bit" of barely talking wasn't an act. Tennille went on to host a daytime talk show in 1980 that ran for 104 episodes.

Toni Tennille reflected on her TV fame

In a 2016 interview posted by Phillyburbs.com , Tennille recalled working with some of the most famous stars of the time on the variety show. "I was so excited about meeting all those fabulous stars like George Burnsand Bob Hope," she said. "[Jackie Gleason] I don't think he really knew much about us, but he gamely came on. I was just in awe, he was such a brilliant comic actor, and his timing was dazzling. You could feel in your bones the charisma he exuded."

"Big stars like Vincent Price, Raymond Burr,Bob Hope, and Tony Randallwere all game to be silly," she added of a recurring sketch titled "Masterjoke Theater."

Tennille, who divorced Dragon in 2014, told Classic Bands that at the height of the duo's TV fame, it was hard to go out in public.

"When Daryl and I were on television with our show in the 70's, it was very difficult," she said. "Couldn't go anywhere, because it was shown all over the country. In fact, I remember Daryl and I had our first hiatus from the show, and we said we got to get out of here so we can walk around like normal people. We decided we'd go to Canada. We flew up to Lake Louise. When we checked in, it was like all the heads were turning, oh there they are, there they are. What we didn't realize was the show was being aired in Canada. We went to the room and people were sitting outside the room waiting for us to walk out."

"It was very hard to just lead a normal life," Tennille added. "I think when you're not on television every week, it's easier."
