'Emma' brings fresh feminist flair to Twin City Players stage

ST. JOSEPH — Twin City Players is bringing a fresh take on a literary classic to its mainstage.

The company will present "Emma," a play by Kate Hamill based on the Jane Austen novel , as the fourth production of its 93rd season.

Performances are scheduled for Feb. 20 through March 8. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays at the TCP Playhouse, 600 W. Glenlord Road, according to a press release.

Tickets are $20 to $15, with a $1 fee per ticket. They can be purchased online at twincityplayers.org or by calling the box office at 269-429-0400.

Hamill presents a modern twist on a classic tale in her adaptation. Emma Woodhouse, the protagonist, is described as clever, educated and energetic. In a time when ladies are expected to be idle, Emma seeks out projects to keep herself busy. She prides herself on being the best matchmaker in town, but love has its own plans.

The play promises screwball comedy and unexpected twists, offering a fresh feminist take on Austen 's beloved story. The adaptation breaks down convention and even the fourth wall with vibrant comic flair, according to the release.

The show is directed by Joe Daniel, with Kaley Schmidt serving as assistant director.

Published in 1815, Austen's fourth novel also served as the basis for the 1995 film "Clueless."
