The Gentlemen 's sophomore season proved that ambition can be deadly.

Guy Ritchie 's Netflix crime comedy released its second installment on Sept. 3, picking up one year after Edward "Eddie" Horniman ( Theo James ) joined forces with Susie Glass ( Kaya Scodelario ) in Bobby Glass' ( Ray Winstone ) criminal empire. This time around, the 13th Duke of Halstead is no longer a reluctant participant.

"I do think he's gone from ... a good person just trying to help his family out, just trying to get these criminals out from his dad's old crumbling estate and keep the lights on, to [becoming] someone who has the ability to enact deep and savage violence," James told Tudum at the time of the season 2 premiere.

Part of that transformation, as fans saw, was in response to the tragic death of his new wife Bella (Benedetta Porcaroli). Season 2 culminates in a betrayal that pushes Eddie further than ever before, allowing him to enact a "horrific revenge" on the person responsible.

So, who killed Bella? Here's everything to know about The Gentlemen season 2 ending, including how Eddie gets revenge for his wife's death and what it means for his future.

How did The Gentlemen season 2 end?

The Gentlemen season 2 finale deals with the fallout from the plane crash that killed Bella in the penultimate episode. Theo told Tudum that her death "completely deconstructed" Eddie's sense of self, leaving him with but one desire: revenge.

At first, all signs point to Bobby, including a mercenary who survived the attack on Halstead Manor that Eddie tortures to extract information. When his hostage names Bobby, Eddie wastes no time arranging a hit on him in prison. He soon realizes his mistake after learning that Uncle Stan ( Giancarlo Esposito ) sold his debt to Bobby on his wedding day, clearing his former boss of suspicion.

Thankfully, Eddie and Susie make it to the prison just in time to save Bobby from the assassin. However, Scodelario said that her business partner's erratic behavior left Susie "quite lost by the end [of season 2]."

"We've left her in a bit of a limbo," the actress told Cosmopolitan in September 2026. "Where she knows that Eddie fundamentally trusts her, but she also knows that he is out of control now, and she has to decide where she fits into all of that."

Over what was supposed to be a quiet meal with Sabrina ( Joely Richardson ), Eddie becomes suspicious that his brother Freddy (Daniel Ings) may have been responsible for Bella's crash.

Gospel John (Pearce Quigley) confirms his fears, revealing that he and Freddy joined forces to get revenge on Eddie for killing his brother in season 1.

For Freddy, the plot was also fueled by his lingering resentment over losing his birthright to Eddie.

"His guiding principle is so much about trying to reclaim status," Ings told Gold Derby in April 2024. "That sort of navigation system can find so many different pathways."

What happened to Gospel John?

Gospel John dies in The Gentlemen season 2 finale, after Eddie forces Freddy to kill him with a chainsaw.

The punishment allows Eddie to avenge Bella's death while making Freddy live with the consequences of betraying him, a moment James described to Tudum as Eddie "psychologically castrat[ing] his brother whilst enacting a horrific revenge on the perpetrator of his wife's death."

In that same interview, writer and executive producer Matthew Read said the so-called justice that Eddie found is "quite warped and strange because he has not processed his grief yet."

For James, it begs the question, "How much of himself does he lose whilst getting revenge on everyone that's hurt him?"

Did Eddie kill Freddy?

No, Eddie did not kill Freddy in the season 2 ending. But Read believes that the "ruthless form of therapy and justice" he takes to hold his brother responsible may reveal more about Eddie than Freddy's survival does.

"I would hope that the question is more about what Eddie becomes, that he would do something as strange as this," he told Tudum. "Has he gone mad or is he moving towards a place where he could be this ruthless leader who is capable of extraordinary things?"

Will there be a season 3 of The Gentlemen ?

Yes, The Gentlemen was renewed for a third season in August 2026.

Variety reported that pre-production was already underway and while other season 3 details have been kept under wraps, James confirmed that the team already has a general direction in mind.

"We have the overarching ambition of where we're going to go," he told Town & Country in September 2026. "We're going to expand the world, go to different countries. But in terms of the minutiae, I mean, it's still very much up in the air."
