Jim Thornton Fired from 'Wheel of Fortune' After Investigation into Disturbing Allegations

A familiar voice will be missing when Wheel of Fortune returns for its new season later this month. Longtime announcer Jim Thornton has been fired from the game show following an investigation into allegations concerning him, according to Variety . Sony Pictures Television confirmed that Thornton's employment was terminated effective immediately.

"Following a thorough investigation, Jim Thornton's employment with 'Wheel of Fortune' has been terminated, effective immediately," the studio said in a statement. Thornton is not expected to be heard when the show returns on Sept. 14. An interim announcer has re-recorded Thornton's portions of upcoming episodes, and no permanent replacement has been announced.

The firing comes after TMZ published photos allegedly showing Thornton on an American Airlines flight with his laptop open to what appeared to be a disturbing online chat room involving conversations about minors. The alleged incident reportedly took place in May, when another passenger alerted a flight attendant. Authorities were waiting for Thornton when the flight landed at Los Angeles International Airport and questioned him before allowing him to leave.

No arrest has been reported, and the allegations have not been established as fact. Thornton and his attorney have not publicly addressed the allegations. An attorney who told TMZ that she represented Thornton said he had become involved in suicide-prevention advocacy after losing a close family member and had spent time in online chat rooms supporting people experiencing suicidal ideation.

Sony previously announced that Thornton had been suspended from Wheel of Fortune while the studio conducted its investigation.

Thornton joined the syndicated game show in 2010 following the death of longtime announcer Charlie O'Donnell. He also served as a substitute announcer on The Price Is Right and has been the voice of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune .

The veteran broadcaster has also built an extensive career in Los Angeles radio and television, earning an Edward R. Murrow Award, Golden Mike Awards and an Emmy during his decades in broadcasting.

For now, however, Wheel of Fortune viewers will have to get used to hearing a different voice when the new season begins.
