Letter: Changes at '60 Minutes' are for the worst

This is in response to Mark Godburn's June 9 letter regarding the multiple firings at CBS News ("Scott Pelley deserved the axe at '60 Minutes'"). In cheering on the firings, Mark is obviously stressing his distaste for 60 Minutes' generally left-leaning reporting. I'm not going to attempt to argue against that as I have recognized it, although personally I do not find it overwhelming. (For the record, I am a right-leaning Republican.) It seems virtually everything is politicized these days, immediately being categorized as politically left or right, similar to either black or white.

Let's set politics aside for a minute and look at 60 Minutes from a non-political perspective. I have been watching 60 Minutes since its debut in 1968, when I was just 7 years old, and have simply enjoyed the three engaging stories presented to me every Sunday evening. 60 Minutes has been an icon of fearless reporting, covering stories of adventure, intrigue and human interest. And, of course, uncovering scam artist after scam artist, typically via hidden camera. Always great to see the look on the scam artist's face when he/she realizes they have been exposed on 60 Minutes.

But now it looks like Bari Weiss and Nick Bilton will be politicizing 60 Minutes, starting with the firing of anyone who is not in line with their views. It's always best when an organization welcomes all perspectives, politically left, right, middle, or better yet, not political at all. 60 Minutes is now moving away from that, toward an "It's my way or the highway" approach. That will not be a good thing, and I fear this is the beginning of the end of the 60 Minutes program I have grown to know and love.
