  • Joan Fontaine's former Carmel estate, Villa Fontaine, is listed for $6 million, while a neighboring property in the Highlands is on the market for $8 million.

Clint Eastwood, Bing Crosby, and Joan Fontaine are three of Hollywood's biggest stars to call California's coastal community of Carmel home. Fontaine, the Oscar-winning actress from Alfred Hitchcock's Suspicion , passed away in 2013, leaving her longtime residence in the community up for grabs at $6 million . Now, another coveted estate neighboring the property in the Highlands has hit the market for the first time in nearly 50 years. Tim Allen of the Tim Allen Properties Team at Coldwell Banker Realty holds the $8 million listing .

Built in 1937, the hilltop residence with redwood trees sits along Lower Walden Road, where spindrift horizons and luxe estates such as Villa Fontaine are the norm. Its sellers picked up the pad in 1979 and proceeded to make renovations throughout the pad with warm, Mediterranean-like interiors. Almost five decades later, the property set on a 1.8-acre lot has hit the market with a main house and midcentury-era guest studio that overlooks Point Lobos, Yankee Point, and the Pacific Ocean.

Family and friends have access to four beds and full baths in the main house, but the property provides more than 6,500 square feet of interiors between both its structures. They are orientated for epic sunset views year-round but early birds can also take in glowing sunrises from expansive terraces and balconies that span the hedge-laced estate. A rare natural spring on the grounds might be its most unique amenity, though.

A tiered pathway lined with red bricks leads guests to the front door of the main house with shingle-style roofing. Bay windows sit directly ahead of the foyer in the living room, where homeowners can easily host guests alongside tranquil blue waterfront vantages. Chef up wholesome meals for guests in the kitchen with Wolf appliances before making a short trek to the formal dining room nearby. A nook, a library with a hand-carved limestone fireplace, and a sun room that opens out to a patio with alfresco dining space also sit on the main level.

Eye-catching stone and wooden floors trail the home with two upper levels. Just above ground level, owners have access to the primary suite that features a sitting area, walk-in closet, and scenic-view balcony. Red jasper marble highlights the en suite, while a red verona alternative brings a secondary en suite to life at the opposite end of the hall. A fourth bedroom crowns the main home. Although cozy, you'll need to pass through an office space to reach its tiled bathroom.

A central staircase leads you back down to the lower level of the home where a media room, sauna, stem room, and bar make up a few of the abode's more relaxing amenities. The latter opens out to a lower patio, complete with a water fountain. A guest studio across the lot with a kitchenette in the main living area, with a bathroom and closet space for luggage, provides just the right amount of privacy for visitors, too.
