8-Year-Old Missing Cat Rescued From Trash Transfer Station in Virginia
Cats have a remarkable gift for finding hiding places no reasonable person would think to check. Under the bed? Too obvious. Behind the curtains? Amateur hour. Inside a damaged couch that is about to be hauled away? Now that apparently has potential.
Mike, an 8-year-old domestic shorthair, disappeared from his Virginia home shortly after his family discarded three old couches. His pet parent, WTOP-TV reporter Neal Augenstein, knew something was wrong when the reliably food-motivated feline failed to appear for dinner.
Anyone who has had a missing cat knows how bad the panic can be. For days, Augenstein walked around the neighborhood, shaking treats, calling Mike's name, and checking places where a frightened cat might hide. Eventually, he remembered that Mike and the family's other cat, Mochi, had previously crawled inside one of the damaged couches.
Augenstein contacted the junk removal company and learned that two couches were still sitting in its warehouse. Unfortunately, the torn one had remained on the truck and was delivered to the I-66 Transfer Station in Fairfax County, where trash is processed before being sent to a landfill.
"When stuff is dumped here, that's going to be crushed," Augenstein explained to NBC Washington . Thankfully, heavy equipment operator Mauricio Martinez spotted Mike sitting on a ledge inside the dumping pit before that could happen.
Because the frightened cat could not jump down safely, workers positioned a loader bucket beneath him and spent about 10 minutes persuading him to leap inside. Mike briefly escaped again and darted into a tunnel leading to a storage room, apparently deciding his rescue had not been complicated enough. Animal control eventually captured him and brought him to a shelter.
Thankfully, Mike was microchipped, which helped shelter workers confirm his identity and reunite him with his relieved family after four days apart. He reportedly arrived home carrying a faint transfer-station smell, but nobody was about to complain.

Viewers were understandably relieved by Mike's unlikely rescue. "THANK GOD for Mauricio! He had enough compassion to slow down and notice the kitty," wrote @bambooblue74. "Mike is so lucky," added @dialyt1309, while @mountainman.4478 summed up the remarkable story in one word: "Incredible!"
Mike's next hiding place will hopefully be somewhere far less dramatic. A cardboard box should provide plenty of mystery without requiring animal control and heavy machinery.
